Shooting with paper (WIP Journal #2)

Posted by 2Dcube on Feb. 20, 2008, 9:19 a.m.

Two days ago I presented 3 concepts, of which the following has democratically been chosen:

PaperBlast.

To be honest, out of the 3 concepts this one is the LEAST interesting in my opinion. But that's ok, for your feedback can help me MAKE it interesting.

PaperBlast is a highscore based 360° shooter which is controlled solely with the mouse. I think it looks pretty cool. Why is it not as fun as it can be? It's a bit too random (random is easy and I am lazy) and there just isn't much to it.

There's one interesting concept, which is that you get more points the longer you wait to kill an enemy. I'm not sure it's really a great idea.

What should I do to make it stand out? I think it needs a drastic change to make it a more original game so if you have a weird idea please tell me.

Wow, that is some crazy paper shooting. You seem to die quite fast if you are not careful though.

The highest I got was a bit over 1500.

What would you like to see changed/added?

The controls are pretty unique, or at least I haven't seen such a thing before - simple and interesting, though a bit easy as you can just aim at one point like the center of the level.

I would say that the projectiles you shoot spread a bit too far and the cone they form is too large, making the combat more random. The amount of points you get for killing enemies is also growing very rapidly, making how long you wait almost the sole factor in score - not a bad idea, but I guess it would be nice if the enmies got harder and harder to kill the longer you wait, forcing the player into a more important decision of when to strike (they could increase in health, too, as currently most enemies can be obliterated with a wave of paper).

I think it may also be a good idea to play on the paper theme, since both you, the enemies, and the projectiles, are made of paper. Perhaps you could collect scraps from the enemies for some weapon upgrades or something of that sort.

It would be also cool to have different level backgrounds, perhaps influencing gameplay - like books that you can climb, pens laying as obstacles, dangerous objects like scissors or puddles that make you wet and slow you down.

You asked for ideas, so here they are ;)

Go to the center, and keep rotating, and you will win. Well… I was winning until something seemingly invisible killed me.

You know, if I'm honest, it would look better in that resolution what you have on this blog. The resolution you know have makes it a little .. clutched.(?)

Realy neat! 4164! Never played anything with controls like that. It's fun! I do agree that paper you shoot spreads to much. That makes it pretty easy.

Also, maybe give a little more warning of where they are going to appear?
