Coming from an android experience to an iPad

I purchased an iPad the other day (the first iPad Air, because the price came down with the release of the new one. It is a nice device, but I think they are too hyped to pay full price for one. Honestly, I think the best combination for devices would be an iPhone with an android tablet. Android can simply do more, and more easily than the iOS.

I also lol'd at people freaking out about swype even though android has had it for years.

~~ iPad vs Android ramblings ~~

But first I am going to explain why I bought the iPad. I think apple devices do last longer and are the best built devices on the market. Mobile is where apple really excels, I mean they are the makers of the iPod which everyone had one at some point. It also plays music better. But more importantly to me, it is the only one that can easily manage and sync your music. People like to bash iTunes, but it simply works. It can sync through wifi, so I dont need to worry about any manual syncing, and if I add music from my iPad or PC, they will sync with each other. If only android had that, I probably would have stuck with it.

BUT, if you want a hassle-free (ish) phone, i'd go with the iPhone, then get an android tablet. You'll probably get the most from your money that way, unless you like to browse the internet and post on facebook all day. But I don't think we're the crowd that does that.

There are another two reasons why I wanted to get an iPad. The first is I wanted to stick with an android phone to make it less annoying to move everything over. And the other is I really like that moto360 watch. And its only on android…. what a shame.

Now for things that I'm not as fond of on the iPad:

- Can't share a page, song, etc from an app to another app (Wunderlist, Pushbullet, Evernote) as easily. (Maybe it is more complicated in iOS and not supported as much?)

- Missing some google features and apps (google keep, and easy to use chromecast)

- I also cant use google remote desktop, however I found a better alternative, TeamViewer. Really cool app.

But iOS is just very fluid with their UI. Their keyboard, touch movements, everything. I also am very pleased with some apps I found to draw with and it looks great. Thats another reason I got one. I used to draw up sketches with ideas and design concepts on paper, and my desk would always get messy and unorganized pretty quickly. Being able to do this wherever I am and save them digitally makes it more convenient and much easier to manage. Very happy with that.

And of course apple doesn't even sell stylus'ses at their store. Me and apple just don't fit together well. lol. I'm always trying to do something different from what they have to offer, where android has those capabilities and more. (at the expense of some glitches)

Pictures to come soon.

I'm guessing most people here would prefer android as well? Also, what platform do you think is better to release games and apps on first?

In my experience it's a lot easier to test and share apk's. Releasing on iOS is worth it for the moneys. But you will waste time getting it set up. I've had plenty of issues with GM:S at least…Like right now even the early access version does not support the iPhone 6 and 6+ screen resolutions. If your goal is to just keep making your app better (more iterations), I'd go with android.

I think GM:S probably just needs to be updated for the new phones.

I see apps come out on iOS first, maybe because it is a consistent device. Otherwise I think I see more features come out on android first now, maybe because it is simpler to implement certain things and android is more popular? Though iOS8 seems to have a lot more to offer than before. I'm liking it.

Also, the iOS dev on our team is using Swift and some objective c to build our app project, so it would be more up-to-date than any exporters I'd imagine.

Stopped reading at "iTunes works."

Just kidding. My experience with iDevices is limited to a few iPods (I actually still have a Shuffle somewhere, but the fact that I can't find it and don't care much to try should say something). Years ago I had a Nano but if I recall it got approximately three drops of rain on it and just quit.

My girlfriend had some version of the iPhone for a few years at least, but she actually switched over to a Galaxy S5 back in August and keeps going on about how much she likes it. Seriously, she won't shut up.

I've personally got a shitty little Android phone from Virgin Mobile. I think it has like 512mb of RAM or something but fuck it, I'm paying less than half of what I was with Verizon and it does its job as a phone.

It's more like a walled zoo at this point, with all those flappy animals ;) a Wacom tablet/phablet sounds awesome btw. Did you pay full price for the Surface Pro? They seem so expensive compared to other tablets… but then… look at all those USB ports. It really seems worth it if you consider it a touch-screen laptop and get a keyboard add-on/case.

The surface pro is pretty much a laptop + tablet combo. But I realized that when im on the go, I dont really like to be hardcore programming or anything.

I have apps to design, test, and monitor my servers and apps. I also have project management apps, facebook google and twitter (and hootsuite), and teamviewer for remote connection. Plus, I have kindle with a couple of programming books, wunderlist for notes, evernote and penultimate for drawing up and organizing my ideas, music that I can manage without requiring internet access and sync when I come home, soundcloud (which still needs some work), a calendar, and google docs (just because i can…). Because iOS8 copies what android has always been doing, it basically has everything I need now.

However, I would probably recommend getting an iPhone with an android tablet. Its both more cost effective and more convenient. I'm just picky about my playlists which is why I went with the iPad with galaxy s5, but android phones are picky about how they should be used before you get glitches, battery drains, and restarts. I decided to get more capacity for my iPad, and stopped using mSD cards in the android phones. Seriously. I dont like apple for charging so much for more storage space, but the SD cards are problematic on some occasions that cause more problems than good.

Anyway, walled garden is a good approach for those who cant tell the good apps from the bad. Im glad theres two main platforms. Kinda like how Mac/PC is/ Both have their advantages.
