Must... Resist... Temptation

My friend just got his tax return and blew it all on building a high end PC… worth over 1500$. I helped him build it, but afterwards it really tempted me to look into PC building again and scanning newegg and microcenter pages for hours.

My current build has served me well despite its disadvantages. The motherboard could have been better, the case could have been better, and at that point I might as well do a full upgrade.

I was looking at this tower here, which I think looks pretty cool: corsair case

Then I could combine it with i7 4.0 ghz, gigabyte motherboard, and liquid cooling. Unfortunately, I would also probably want to upgrade my power supply from 550 to 750, and then also get an EVGA 980gtx graphics card low-profile.

And with all of this stuff, it would come close to 800$ (or more if I also get an SSD, which I feel is not worth it yet)… and I don't really want to spend that. I mean, its not quite 1500$, but it would probably be more compelling if I could sell my older rig or at least its parts, but I'm sure that people probably prefer to build their own after all.

How much money do you think is worth spending on a new computer for a casual gamer?

I blew ~1000€ on my PC about a year and a half ago. So there's that.

Has served me well, though I could use another harddrive by now.

There's no SSD and GPU is GTX660. I don't care much for the SSD but I'd like to upgrade that GTX to a later model.

You're not telling us the specs of your current build. ;)

SSD is way worth it for me, but I'm okay with 128GB (100$ 2.5 years ago, that fucking cheap!) + external. Of course you keep a large disc for gigantic games and such.

I do multiple reboots and program restarts every day and I typically operate on lots of small files. Nothing is worse than looking at that load bar. SSD is faster no matter how you measure and mine has probably ended up saving me from adhd medical bills.

If you still only care about FLOPS/$, well than SSD is not for you. Maybe a hybrid is a good solution, but I'm not up to date on prices.

That's funny. I just purchased a laptop off of Newegg yesterday because my other one was coming up on its eighth birthday. It also has SSD, and the small size (256GB) was what caused the most hesitation, but SSDs are very much worth it. But man, having i7, 16GB of RAM, and a dedicated graphics card just makes me salivate ghhahsgghhhshgdha

If you're building a tower, I recommend running SSD plus a standard hard disk. Put all your programs and your OS on the SSD, and save your files to the other. You'll get lightning fast boot and load times and will still have enough space for all those Youtube videos and sexy images and porn and stuff.

My current build is:

3.6Ghz (OC) Phenom II X2

6GB 1333 crucial RAM

1GB EVGA GTS250

2x 7200 RPM HDD's

550W power supply

What I'd like from the new specs:

case has better airflow, supports water cooling, and front 3.0 USB ports, air filters

Motherboard support of USB 3.0, more PCI slots, more support for RAM upgrades

intel i7 processor with water cooling, because I'd be getting a new mobo anyway

Possibly SSD

New power supply just to be safe

(I'd hold off on the graphics card until I really need to upgrade it)

@kilin: I was planning on putting only the OS on the SSD for 2 reasons. I want to distribute the disk usage between my uses (OS, programs, large files and backup). Also I want to try to prolong the life of the SSD.

@Nopykon: If I were to get one i'd get one for ~$60-$70 USD for a 128GB.

I tried playing Citys Skylines yesterday and it ran OK, but the graphics card ran HOT. Luckily I have a side-fan hooked up to a fan controller I cranked up to max to keep it from melting itself or what have you… Problem is, is that its not entirely the GC's fault but also the motherboard, which means that I will need a new motherboard which I would just bundle with a new processor anyway to put in my new case. Hopefully the case will have much better airflow as well.
