This Screenshot May or May Not Be...

Oh God, I have two blogs on the activity feed. Is this a record, me being greedy, or just me being more active?

I'll go with active, because it sounds much nicer.

Duster, this is embarrassing, please look the other way.

Before I say anything, this is progress on LODM. Why am I working on it, you ask? Because I love it so. And eventually I need a portfolio game, and this belongs there. One day when I'm proficient in C#, I'll rewrite the entire game in XNA, and hopefully make it even better.

I've been working on a very important, and specific cutscene lately, which is probably more endgame content, but it's in there anyway. I felt it was supposed to be one of the hardest (non-optional) boss fights, so I was excited to work on it.

This fight may or may not be inspired by Flandre Scarlet, and this screenshot may or may not be partially forged.

Okay, so I'm not all that good at forging screenshots. The particles are real, the HUD is real, the boss health and character health are at random values. In other words, the boss fight isn't complete. This stage is designing particles for it instead. The fire one seems to have worked well, though I promise, it looks a lot better in motion.

When I actually finish the fight, I'll put up a non-forged video. And then I'll lose the fight and it will be epic.

Anyhow, just saying that I'm not as lazy as everyone thinks. If I have time to forge a screenshot, then I must have time to work on the game I'm forging for, and obviously a reason.

So off this topic, I have to say I'm surprised how quickly the suggestions in my last blog (even in the comments regarding the featured game) were implemented. I'd like to see a lot more game designing going on, and particularly good games that inspire people to do their own great work.

And now you're pulling back old users. What a success.

Cursive font on the HUD might need replacement, it's fairly unreadable.

Avoid cursive fonts unless necessary =p

Someone has been playing a lot of Touhou here, clearly :3

Not too bad, looks pretty good.

That font was honestly the only thing I wasn't impressed with when I looked at the picture.

And yes, inspired by Touhou in the fact that dodging is actually kind of fun. This boss you actually have to hold out more than attack, which makes it different from all the other ones I've got.

I would say the background would be better if it were faded more (stands out too much) and, yeah, like everyone else, that cursive font is killing everything. White, regular fonts sometimes look boring but they're probably there in other games for the best.

The sprites could use some non-cloud shading too, but they're fine like that.

Yeah, those particles look nice.

Heh, the background's temporary. I created that in GIMP in about two seconds, plus render time.

Also, I didn't pick up the cloud shading until recently. Before I was using a simple method of directional shading but I found it looked a lot worse than I'd hoped, so I combined it with a little added shading to give the clothes/hair some texture. It's less bland but much more difficult to animate.

I'll need to skim through fonts a bit. Choosing a good font is something I don't do well at.

Also, hearing particle compliments helps a lot.

I personally don't mind the cursive HUD font, but it is a bit jagged.

Yeah, my beloved anti-aliasing failed. Probably is less effective on fonts.
