GM Music and FL Studio Questions

Posted by Castypher on Oct. 25, 2010, 1:06 p.m.

So first off, I have a couple questions regarding music composition and Game Maker.

1) Does anyone know of a good electric guitar/amp VST compatible with FL Studio? Don't say FL Slayer. I've messed with that thing for a while and I can't make it produce any decent guitar sounds.

2) Is there a free sound extension for Game Maker? I'm talking one that can easily loop MP3s/OGGs. I know of GMFMOD (or maybe it was called something else; I forget the name), but apparently there's licensing involved.

3) Do we really have to buy a license in order to distribute MP3s that we make? I know OGGs are fine to distribute, but they're usually less accessible without a media player extension of some sort.

Anyway, that's my content. Time for some filler.

I am still working on Terminys. For those who complained, the last demo was a tech demo and no more. Thanks to those who tested and provided feedback. If anyone at all is interested in becoming a regular tester for the game, let me know.

In some past blog, someone mentioned the idea of a multiplayer shoot-em-up. I haven't seen many of those. Sure I've seen co-op shoot-em-ups, but hardly any competitive ones. The only one I've seen that worked well was Phantasmagoria of Flower View, where each player had his own screen, and doing things like destroying bullets made it harder for your opponent to survive.

So all shmuppers know that the generic firing pattern for players is some constant bullet stream that doesn't usually have any twists to it. And bosses have intense barrages that players have to dodge. But what about giving a player boss-like behavior versus another player? Any ideas on how that could work?

If you were looking to play a competitive multiplayer shoot-em-up (and by that, I mean the players fight each other somehow), would you look for:

1 - Surviving a boss who is streaming bullets at you while avoiding the other player

2 - Both players have more intense bullet patterns, but are locked to one quarter of the screen

3 - Phantasmagoria of Flower View style: you basically "summon" something to attack the opponent while trying to survive

It's not a big deal. Just an interesting idea someone brought up that wouldn't hurt to think about. After all, creativity is what makes games.

And I leave you with everyone's favorite pedoclown.

No, you need a license if you plan on including an mp3 encoder in your application for commercial use
So the actual MP3 files (not lame_enc or whatever people use now) are usable in commercial distribution, or MP3s are only legal if the game isn't commercial?

I first heard about this two weeks ago, and seeing as MP3 is my main music file format, you can guess I was pissed.

SuperSound.dll is good for oggs, I've used it in a couple games.

Most CDs you buy/music you download is in mp3 format. Not sure why you'd need a license to include mp3s in your games (as long as it's your own music, of course).

You probably won't find an electric guitar VSTi that compares to an actual electric guitar. I downloaded a fairly convincing one a while back, but it only sounded decent with enough distortion. Unfortunately I can't remember the name… it's been years.

aac is the less legally confusing version of mp3.

Dig 2.0 is a sick guitar amp simulator, it's what I use. It's free, so probably the best you can get for free. As for a guitar simulator VST, use RealStrat [google it]
