Game Maker 8.1

Complete waste of $25.

Don't upgrade. The arguments change is absolutely retarded. While needed, it prevents me from working with older projects due to them having anywhere between 400 and 1500 scripts. Not only this, but if you're using Windows 7 or GMAPI, you're wont even be able to run your games. On my Wndows 7 machine, Game Maker crashes at compile time.

I was hesitant at first, but now I think I'll go full C++ for all of my game development needs. Maybe even C#, but I doubt that. I'm not a Microsoft whore.

I think we need to learn briefness in posting. Or perhaps blog more about our rants so you can take the time to read and sub comment on them. This 'was' a game dev site, so why not bring back that tradition? My ADD prevents me reading all these potentially interesting comments.

My ADDDD makes me ignore comments that don't involve elves and dragons. It stands for "Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Deficit Disorder", by the way.

@Spectre: Java used in robotics? Hell no! Most robots can't run the JVM. Java in robotics would be quite niche. Java in online banking? You could pretty much use Java, PHP, CSP, ASP, ASP.NET, Ruby, Python, Perl, hell even Brainfuck, from what I've seen most of the banks I've seen use PHP or ASP. Mobile phones usually have some programming in Java, but at the moment only smart phones have any large amount of Java and smart phones are still a minority.

Universities usually teach C and Java in computer science, one as an example of imperative programming and the other as an example of object oriented programming, Java is probably used because it is a rigidly structured language, with strict definitions to most of if not all of the language, as opposed to C/C++ which are much less structured, which leads to infuriating results sometimes.

Still it's not that it doesn't have it's place as a language, it's just not quite what you have listed, browser based games and applets would have been a good example as there are a fair few that use Java (most are flash though, but there are some big ones in Java).

Hey everyone!

Quote:
First, we've added the ability to turn OFF the new parameter checking system. This gives extension makers time to update them, without forcing those of you making games with them, back into Game Maker 8.0. This is a PER-GAME option, and you can find the switch in the Global Game Settings dialog. Any Game Maker 8.0 game loaded, is automatically set to having this OFF, but you can always change it back if you've upgraded your scripts. Be warned; this IS going to be mandatory in the future, so please use the extra time to upgrade your scripts.

Turns out they removed .fon support as a "fix" for my problem. Only YYG would list a feature being removed as a bug fix <_<

@Cyrus: Game Maker. Your copy is never legit since 7.0

I'm happy about removing the argument change. However, my Game Maker still fails to compile and instead throws an error about 1/3 of the way through.
