FarCry Makes Me Cry

At it's release, it was probably considered extremely good, but now I want to cry.

<table width=100%><tr><td style="background: transparent url(http://64digits.com/users/DesertFox/header_line.PNG) repeat-x scroll 0%; width:100%; height: 24px;"><h2 style="color:black">The Zone</h2></td></tr></table>The AI in the game is <i>just. so. horrible</i>. If you are a little distance away, and you are crouching, they will never see you, even if you shoot them with the silenced mp5 (which you get extremely early) so as long as you don't shoot anything noisy, you are fine. There is a distance upon which they will never see you if you remain crouched. Stand up though, and they will see you coming miles away (literally, will discuss this in a moment).

<table width=100%><tr><td style="background: transparent url(http://64digits.com/users/DesertFox/header_line.PNG) repeat-x scroll 0%; width:100%; height: 24px;"><h2 style="color:black">Rocks</h2></td></tr></table>Now lets talk about the rocks. In-game, you have an infinite supply of rocks the size of your fist to be thrown as distractions. Unfortunately, they are <i>absolutely, 100% useless</i>. Whenever you throw them, it does not distract the guards. Instead, it tells them <i>exactly where you are</i>. Their horrible AI is more than balanced out by their amazing skills of deduction. Simply from seeing a rock in the air, before it even hits the ground, by reverse-calculating it's trajectory, they instantly know where you are, even if you, and the rock, are behind them, where they cannot see. There is, however, a limit to this. If you are far enough away, no matter how many rocks you throw, they will not be able to find you, or even deduce your existence, even if the rock hits them in the head. This distance is not the same as above. It is not a very far distance, yet at the same time, it can not be short enough. That distance is the intelligence zone. Outside of that zone, they remain imbeciles, yet if you enter it, they instantly become highly intelligent geniuses.

<table width=100%><tr><td style="background: transparent url(http://64digits.com/users/DesertFox/header_line.PNG) repeat-x scroll 0%; width:100%; height: 24px;"><h2 style="color:black">Psychic Powers</h2></td></tr></table>This AI has is senses. As said before they can spot you by calculating a thrown rock's trajectory. If you are hiding within the intelligence zone, and so much as leave a pinky poking out, they will instantly converge and fire. Also, as long as they have spotted you and had physical view of you within a certain time, they can use their psychic senses to determine your exact location. Thankfully, that time isn't that long. If you even so much as walk normally within the intelligence zone, they sense you and use psychic powers to alert their comrades. If you are outside of the intelligence zone, their psychic alert cannot go out, so I theorize that they somehow must use <i>your</i> brain to piggyback a signal or something.

<table width=100%><tr><td style="background: transparent url(http://64digits.com/users/DesertFox/header_line.PNG) repeat-x scroll 0%; width:100%; height: 24px;"><h2 style="color:black">Absolute Accuracy</h2></td></tr></table>Yet another amazing thing about this AI is their sense of sight. They can literally see you coming a mile away. A rocket-launcher goon in a tower is almost invincible, whenever you try to get some height to get a shot, they spot you instantly if you are standing normally, and fire missile after missile. This AI also has unwavering accuracy, their only reason to miss their target is the gun itself's limits of accuracy. Because a rocket launcher is perfectly accurate, no matter how far away you are, they will always, always hit you dead-on unless you move, and the rockets are very hard to detect unless you are looking for them. Also, when they hit, you are given practically no clue as to where it came from. This combined with their amazing sight, means that a single rocket-launcher goon in a tower 800m away can take you out in a single strike. Did I mention that the rockets have amazing splash damage range? As in a rocket that hits 15-20 feet away will kill you.

<table width=100%><tr><td style="background: transparent url(http://64digits.com/users/DesertFox/header_line.PNG) repeat-x scroll 0%; width:100%; height: 24px;"><h2 style="color:black">X-Ray Vision</h2></td></tr></table>Their sight also extends through walls, bullet-penetrable ones anyways. Tents, mesh, even sheet metal in some cases, anything that a bullet can go through, they can see through. And because quite a few of the buildings are canvas tents, this adds significantly to their advantage. They will spot you dead on through three tents, and fire, and you will not even know where they are. Tents however do have one thing going for them. They are impenetrable to rockets. A mere couple of millimeters of cloth can stop a rocket instantly, shielding you from the explosion completely. Why your clothes cannot do this, I don't know. If I were the protagonist, I'd just wear a tent the entire game for rocket and grenade immunity. However, once you exit the tent, you are 100% fucked, as they can fire a rocket every few seconds, and will know exactly when you come out…

<table width=100%><tr><td style="background: transparent url(http://64digits.com/users/DesertFox/header_line.PNG) repeat-x scroll 0%; width:100%; height: 24px;"><h2 style="color:black">In The End</h2></td></tr></table>So this game has amazingly bad AI which is more than made up with amazing abilities. Its still a fun game though. The fun part is shoving a barrel of stuff down a hill and crushing a few mercenaries. That and the magazines laying around. PlayMerc, and Redneck Monthly.
