Calling All Pixel Artists

Calling all pixel artists! Calling all pixel artists! Danger! Danger! Your assistance is needed!

Please answer our distress signal if you meet the following criterion:

You are a good pixel artist.

You are skilled in the art of 16x16 RPG tileset development.

You are skilled in the art of RPG character sprite sheet development.

You able to work for profit share and hopes/dreams.

You are not a frog-demon intent on consuming my soul.

I can't say more be cause we are hashing out the contracts, but some co-workers of mine are working on an iOS game.

We have spent the past month in serious discussion over game mechanics, required assets, structure, and assorted items, so I am not just pulling this out of my ass. During WWDC 2012 (the Apple expo where they announced the retina MacBooks), one of the coworkers involved had the chance to talk to several developers employed by Apple, and the resulting conversations went something like this:

"Hey, we've got this game idea that we want to start working on, what is your immediate feeling to my description of the game?"

"holy crap, please make that because it sounds awesome!"

Rinse and repeat a bunch of times.

This is a serious business venture. Our intent is to submit and get an initial version of the game launched before December 17th, which is when the entire app store is locked down - if we can get our app into the New and Noteworthy at this time, it will remain there for the entire Christmas season - and apps in this position stand to make tons of money. After this, we will be updating with additional content and mechanics.

So in short, serious venture, no money up front, some very serious and skilled programmers, and lots of work to be done. If you feel you are up to it, then that is awesome. You must only pass…

…the test.

The test is simply. Sprite three items for me. Feel free to interpret them within reason. They are:

One (1) 16x16 tile of a rear (north) sewer wall with a pipe or grate, out of which can be seen the hint of sludge dripping out.

One (1) 16x16 tile of a arcane glyph that indicates the presence of a currently-invisible magical trap.

One (1) 16x24 character sprite, neutral pose, facing south, unarmed.

Oh, and if anyone knows how to contact DSG or BlueBoyX to see if they want in on this, give them a shout for me, as I got no clue myself, except that DSG still blogs once in a very blue moon.

To those who either joined the site in the last 4 or so months, and are thus unaware of why you should take some guy you've never seen before seriously, I'm your local goderator who simply hasn't been super active on the site recently due to my daily job as an iOS developer, having recently spent much of the last three months doing development for the Discovery Channel iPad app. So I've got credentials.

@rob so true - sorry specter :(

@toast - based in those samples, the other programmers on the team have expressed interest in you doing a portion of the art for the game.

Here's my 90 minute, beer in hand attempt at a character:

1x

2x

He's a bit of a plain jane. I guess this would be a "background character".

I had difficulty with shading, particularly on the plaid shirt, if any of the more experienced pixel artists wouldn't mind giving me some advice with that?

Oh well, why not give it a go. Here, also, is 1:1 and 2:1 pictures of the sprites. :P

// Strange enough, these glyphs seem to be off-sync.
