A call to spriters...

Posted by Fabio on Oct. 29, 2011, 3:32 p.m.

I've got a game on my plate right now that I'm pretty excited about. The basic idea is this: traverse randomly generated labyrinth-esque dungeons, throw in a level editor and cool lighting, and viola–new game.

Anyway, I've got the groundwork laid down (random dungeons, level editor is in place) and I've been spriting everything on my own so far. Everything looks pretty good, and I think I've done an alright job thus far, but who am I kidding? I'm no sprite artist.

Here is the look I have so far:

Now, as you can see–our hero is a white block. This is because no matter how many attempts I make, I cannot create a good looking character sprite. So this is where the talented spriters of 64Digits come into play. I need help with a hero.

No guidelines whatsoever–he doesn't even need to be human, or even a he. All I ask is that it be around 20p x 20p (anything under that is fine) and kept around the same-ish style that I have so far. Aside from that, go hog wild. All I need is walking animations and idle sprites.

I can't offer much besides full credit in the game and my undying gratitude. If you're interested, post here or send me a private message. Thanks!

the level textures are actually decent, just need to make borders on them, smooth the edges more. a character that size shouldn't be that hard, but i'm not that great with character sprites either so i can't help there lol. nice idea though, i would like to play this =P

though 20x20 is really easy… perhaps i'll give it a try if i get bored enough xD

I'm "eh" at spriting but there's a thread I've been following on the TIGSource Forums that has a spritesheet for 16 * 16 characters (I know, not 20 * 20 and they're black, white, and red) - it could give you some ideas: http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=8467.405

The cool thing about little characters like that is you define the whole sprite by 1 or 2 main features usually. So it may also help if you decide on a feature or two for your main character. Like a nose. Only not, because that's Mario :P

That size seems just perfect for a game starring Potfrog.

If your game is anything like Epic Dungeon I will fucking love you.

Gameplay video. Amazing game and only 80msp ($1) on the Xbox Live Indie Marketplace.

So it's like a side-scrolling graphical version of NetHack? Sounds interesting.

Come to think of it, that is a pretty good size.

I guess it is kind of similar to Spelunky, (just looked up what that was, pretty fucking amazing stuff) but I do feel it'll be different in some distinct ways. I can't comment much on that yet, aside from the fact that I'll be working hard to make each room a different challenge and there will be a focus on user-created content.
