GMC Graphics Forum... Ugh!

Posted by FredFredrickson on Oct. 11, 2006, 5:38 p.m.

Normally when I am discussing the GMC here, I am trying to get people to stop calling everyone there a noob, stop picking fights with them, actings like one site is better than the other, etc, etc. Well not this time. This time I'm going to follow Takagi's lead and complain about a few things that have been bothering me from the graphics forum on the GMC. Some of them may have bothered some of you, some of them may just be me being too annoyed by little things - you be the judge.

The first thing that has been buggin' me like a sharp stick in my eye is the use of stupid catch phrases and words. Here's a few example topic names that are just starting to get under my skin:

· Create your own _______

· Pimp my _______

· _______'s graphics workshop

· Put your own _______ in my game!

Come on folks. The graphics forum is a place to request sprites, or to hel people out. It's not a bloody workshop. Nobody is pimping anything there. One user used one of these topic names and suddenly there's 4-5 of them floating around… I'm not going to do anything about them above and beyond normal moderating, but for some reason, they just piss me off.

Another, less frequent, but more painful annoyance is the appearance of 2-3 topics by people advertising their services for different kinds of sprites. One user created two topics, one as a general "graphics workshop" and the other one for creating "space graphics." The second one is closed now, but I am still without any understanding of why "space graphics" can't be made in a general "graphics workshop." Note to any potential posters in the graphics forum - if you offer your services, make one topic for it, the envelopes every possible graphic type you can make. People will like that, and (more importantly) I won't have to close it.

And finally, despite my best efforts at keeping the forum useful for others, and not like a daycare center for mentally deficient children, there is still the problem of people flaming others, bumping their topics, and generally making asses of themselves. Though I have made some progress in this area, there continues to be a few people who just "hang out" in the graphics forum all day, making inflammatory, one-word, and useless posts in every topic they can. Telling people they will help with everything, and coming through with nothing. A few weeks ago, I had to delete about 20-30 posts, spread among about 15-20 topics, all from the same user, and all flaming / spam. That wasn't much fun sorting through the mess, but I can't say I didn't have a big grin on my face as I put them on mod preview. Because I did. [:D]

Anyway, complaints aside, the forum is looking a lot better than it used to, so that is at least something. If any of you guys post requests / fulfillments / questions there, be sure not to do any of the bad stuff I described above.

In other news, I am getting some of the menu stuff done for the dogfighting game today, so hopefully in the next release you'll be able to use your Reflect Accounts to connect to people, join servers, etc. I should be able to get some power-ups put in there as well. Now that I think about it, I might just wait until I finish it to put out the next version! We'll see! [:P]

I gave up on the GMC a long time ago….

I usually stay here, or go to GMG, (only because people actually notice methere, and I have a few (3) fans…)

But yeah the GMC is 90% useless, the 10% goes to the mods there, who work hard and do there jobs, its just bad you can't implement an anti-noob policy, or have a standards registration test (to improve the quality).

Well, I wouldn't write the entire GMC off as useless. More often than not, if you have a problem and post it there, you'll get an answer to it within an hour of posting… which is a lot better than many of the forums I've been to before operate.

Sure, there's a lot of useless stuff there, but when you break it down, it's good for a lot of problems you might have, and it's great for releasing games.

I love the topics that say:

"Create graphics for my game!"

As if it would be some kind of honour to do it for them…

I agree, these "Workshops" are taking over that forum.

@RetroVortex, I know what you mean but GMG or the GM Showcase will eventually get heaps of members and then it will just turn into another GMC. The GMC is the way it is because of the mass amount of members.
