The 2 edged sword of fangames

I have been doing some thinking about fangames, and have some advice for those who are or have been considering creating one.

The biggest problem with them is that you can never please everyone, even if your game is a nearly perfect clone. Pokemon Twilight, the fangame I created is where I am drawing these comments.

Heres the reason its an issue: If you make a great fangame, you will get plenty of attention from half the population of the forums. Many of these people (in the case of my own game twilight) become fanatical about it. The "upper class" members, however, regard fangames with a cold eye. Most of them treat the game and the game maker as lower teir (from what I have observed, dont shoot me) and give alot more credit towards original games.

That means that with even the best fangame, you are going to sweep a limited number of players because the other half hates the principle. If you try to STOP, or at least slow down, you make all the fanaticals angry.

Moral of the story: Just avoid it, even it it is just for fun.

Oh yeah, here is another TCOK: WW screenshot. Progress is great, and I just cleaned up all the engine glitches and other little pains. It is moving as smooth as silk now.

I'm not sure where I stand on fan games. I just don't. I won't create any for fun, but I'll do it for learning better GM skills. That is all.

I enjoy making fangames, but I like making original games more.

I also try to make my fangames have some original features.

I think they are fun, but there is no win win situation.

Hmm, I'm working on a Columns fangame.

Of course, it's not a fangame of a major Nintendo series, so I think I'm in the clear on this one.

Also, that screenshot kicks ass.

I don't compare them to the originl. As long as it's fun why should you care.

also, you forgot to add that if you're going to make clones give in a good twist or make clones of games people have never heard of…

I think fangames are great to do, if you want to hone your skills as a game maker… Sure the Mario Bros. engine seems simple, but just try to make it in GM. [:D]

'clones'. Bad. 'fangame'. Good.

Comprende?
