New Computer Build (well nearly)

Posted by Ghostwalking on Aug. 2, 2012, 8:20 a.m.

to be fair i have fully built it but there seems to be a problem with the display, or well lack of display. after putting it all together and what not i got around for the inishal boot and thankfully it seemed to work, bar the screen no showing anything,

this was until it turned it off at which point during the shut-down the screen seemed to flicker for about 1/2 a second until it fully turned off.

this so far is the only thing stopping me from finishing the build and getting down to some serious gaming on my own computer.

Processor: AMD 3.6

Ram 4GB

Motherboard ASUS M5A78L-M

(note it is slowly being upgraded over time, this it due to money problems)

Any ideas would be greatly received.

Do you have a graphics card? If so, is it properly plugged into the PCI slot and the power supply?

Is it turned on?

You may want to try unplugging everything. (Be careful) and take your time putting everything back the way it was. You said that it's being upgraded over time so there is a chance that something important may be amiss inside of the PC. Take your time when messing around with that kind of stuff.

Thank you for being very helpful and giving detailed descriptions on all of your computer parts.

yeah there is just sooooo many things it could be… here are some questions:

- do you have the display connected to the motherboard or the GPU? (if it's your first boot, it's usually better to connect it to the motherboard if it has one - they usually do)

- upon turning it on, do all the lights work properly, are they flashing? does it shut off immediately or does it stay on? if it stays on without flashing than that's a good sign and might mean it's just a problem with the monitor's connections.

i had a similar problem before, i use an HDMI cord for my HDTV on my PC. if i plug it into the 1st HDMI port on my HDTV it doesn't work at all but it does work in the 2nd port. i have no idea why though…

but yeah for your first boot i'm pretty sure you won't have all the necessary drivers for it to work with your gpu (if you have one) so you would need to plug in a monitor into the motherboard assuming it has a vga output.

of course im not the most experienced with custom builds, i had mine built for me, all i did was chose the components ^^

My contribution is a list of trouble-shooting questions that aren't actual links.

Does it POST?

Is the power supply strong enough to power everything?

Is the power supply hooked up to the graphics card?

Is there cheese-wizz in the power supply?

Is there even a power supply?

Does the rooster crow at midnight?

Is NP in P?

Have you tried dividing by zero?

At least if you had to figure out that before being able to use your computer, then you'd have a lot less retards online.

Did you try turning it off and back on again

Ghostwalking 12 years, 3 months ago

is now working

dont know how it's working as is set up the same as when it wasnt displaying anything. or prahaps the division by zero had something to do with it. oh well
