Game Dev

Well I've been working on a game called Rapture (which has been changed to Faust) for a while in Game Maker and have since changed the development over to completely java.

I've had to write the entire construction set from scratch and attempt to implement features that would allow for easy modifying of the core game elements. This has taken quite some time and effort and I can finally begin to actually start to rebuild Faust from its game maker source.

The story behind the game is centered around a half mechanical, half organic player who has lost his/her wife or husband (You can choose at the beginning) to post apocalyptic events. The AI for your brain crashed after a fall into a chasm and you wake up an unknown time later to realize that your mate is missing and you don't know where you are exactly. Drained of energy from the time spent in suspension, you must seek food, and shelter and protect yourself against the new sources of evil that have risen since the event occurred. The new sources of evil being mankind in peril and in an uproar of chaos due to the lack of established government, which fell long ago.

While your main objective is to find him / her, your more important base needs come first, like surviving in the new environment.

It is not only supposed to be about scratching to survive, but you have to make a large number of grueling choices that guide you to your mate in the end, be he/she alive or not. The choices will have positive and negative moral effects and are meant to teach or bolster your actual philosophy and wisdom to guide you along. I'll have more on the story after I get the game mechanics down.

The game is 2D and is kind of "steam-punkish", with fallout-like decor and scenery.

Your character initially does not know how to use or wield anything besides a rock or stick and can only defend itself as a barbarian would. As time goes on and you gather enough energy to gain actual skill and traits, you can begin to delve into the main classes.

I have a few in mind, like the full prosthetic class that does not need actual calories to survive, but fuel. This class overall deals more melee damage than any other class and can move, jump, climb, and swim fast than all the others.

The Thief class is more rewarding than you might think. I plan this class to never charge directly into combat, but to attack from a far, or to assassinate targets. Though stealing (and being seen stealing), can have negative karmic effects.

The Clairvoyant class, is not really spiritual, but has control of objects through mind. They can deceive enemies into traps and move objects without actually touching them. Manipulation is their art.

I will have more to blog about once I actually get the mechanics down.

Oh man, I love steam-punk games. I can't wait to hear more about this!

Good luck man! I'm taking a java class as we speak, it's pretty simple logic once you understand a few things (different then C++, heh).

Will check back for sure, later. :)

Best of luck!
