Things I Hate About GM Users

Posted by HeroofTime55 on Oct. 31, 2006, 6:42 p.m.

If you do any of these things, it pisses me off big time. Just thought to let you know.

-Resize the screen

-Disable F4 to toggle fullscreen

-Disable Escape (not counting "are you sure you want to quit," that's OK)

-Add the 100x100 preview image as a screenshot

-Not bothering to uncheck preload texture/music on resources, thus leading to uber loading times

-Disabling F1 to view help

-Not being able to skip through intro screens

Don't do any of these, it makes your game SUCK.

In other news, I've got to write up a 750 word essay on Hamlet. I have to pick my topic. It was assigned friday (I was absent visiting college). It's due tomorrow. And I haven't got a clue what to write it on. It's worth 200 points. I'm screwed.

Oh, and thank you OpticalLiam for screwing us all. I'm sure you didnt mean to be quite the asshole you were, but there's no excuse for not telling the mods what you did. You were being a malicious hacker. And you were stupid enough to brag about it on the very site you were hacking.

The so called GM game could actually be a virus!!! Arrggh!!!

Fun though if you're the designer

I support screen resizing if it's done to actually improve the appearance of the game. I'd much rather have the screen be resized and have the game cover up the entire screen rather than not resize it and have 60% of the screen be a huge black border around the actual game screen (which is tiny).

just put a picture in, a picture = 1000 words

by screen resizing do you mean full screen or changing the resolution? just wondering.

Umm…

Ok, 1 I agree with, especially when it makes your screen tiny, and screws with all your window sizes.

2, not so much, because I normally disable that because either I don't want it to be full screen, or it looks bad fullscreen. If it starts fullscreen, then it should be played fullscreen.

3 I agree with

4 I agree with

5 I agree with

6 I dont agree with. Personally, if you even USE the help function, it makes the game look unprofessional, and it looks as if you don't care to take the time to add a help page.

7 I agree with.

@bob799: I mean screen resolution.

It's also annoying when fullscreen dosen't scale, but just makes a black border. It defys any usefullness of full screen.

@TG: number 2 is a bit big. It's never a good idea to limit the user's options. If you think it looks bad in full screen, thats your opinion, someone else might think otherwise. There are some exceptions, when fullscreen is just crap, but there are few of them.

Thankfully, some of the absolute worst are rare (1, 5, and 6 especially). When the program confuses me, I expect F1 to explain things. I don't want to be bothered working my way to the help section through some "professional" menus, just for a small bit of instructions. 6 is very rare, but can be prety bad when it happens.

And, damnit people, stop it with number 4.

I do this to all of my creations. Full screen sometimes makes things look worse, and aside from that, if you don't have something that you want to engulf the user's attention, there is no reason for it to be full-screen.

I also do this, since I never include my help file within the program. If your program is not self-explanatory, or does not include instruction when needed for the player, then it is poorly designed. A help file is not the right alternative to poor design.

First of all, you gotta respect the makers, so that's why you MUST view the intro screen. > : O Second, f1 help looks like crap, even if you make a nice layout.
