I've been considering what genre I wanted to get into after Ultimate Extreme Action PONG is completed, and I'm stuck between two different types: platformer and 3/4 Top Down (think Link to the Past). The Platformer would be a shooter (Mario-style jumping to kill enemies won't work here [:(]) and the Top Down would either be a Guantlet style multiplayer game or a Guantlet style SHOOTER multiplayer game; or maybe even something that doesn't involve Guantlet mechanics at all.
I was curious if the community is getting sick of any particular type of game? Honestly, original sprites are all it takes to satisfy me. Some decent music and originality are all I ask (story-wise, and only to the extent you are capable; its hard to write a 100% original story nowadays). That's why I enjoy making over-the-top or parody style games. You aren't really meant to take them seriously. That's what I liked about that Alexia the Rabbit game, too. Whether that was its purpose or not, the fact that it made me laugh will bring me back, even though it is hard as hell. Also, who can guess what game this is?
Personally I would recommend finishing your pong game before thinking of other projects. I've abandon many games due to the fact that I relatively easy slip into other, more "exciting" projects.
I'm guilty of the same; I was more concerned over whether there were any genre's 64D is getting a bit sick of, so that I may avoid it if necessary.
Nah. If it's a good game, we will mostly accept it ;)
i've had fun playing around with perspective tricks lately, anything outside standard platform view is solid to me. but then again i have a few small-ish platformers planned, they're hard to avoid entirely.
i don't think any genre in particular has been overdone so much as styles within genres, we're all pretty sick of seeing platformers made from 16x16 blocks cause they all look like Jumper no matter what you do. i can't think of another example, except artsy Seiklus-wannabes get on my nerves.
