i hate to be like that, but it's partially cause i don't see ever getting a game popular enough to sell, and i'm of the age where money is a priority.
If popularity is the reason you are into game design, then maybe it really isn't for you.You should make games because you love doing it, and you're interested in playing them yourself. It's cool that you make music though :D

This sounds like me. <3@hel, the more you like making and playing your own game, and adding things that you think is cool, the better chances that it will get some publicity. But, most important of all, making games require PATIENCE. Taking your time with a game will only make it better and better, and eventually people will pick up on it and it will get a decent sized fanbase, and if it's good enough, it will get some good publicity.Of course, advertising it wouldn't hurt either. :p
I think advertising is the last phase of game release (notice how I didn't say design?), and should not be taken into account during the creation of the game.
Chances are, the more fun your game is, the more popular it will be.
i can make things look good in GM, but i've never had enough content to call our game "complete". you know, it's fun to play but gets boring quick.
maybe i could find a partner again, it was originally mine and Extravisual's but we haven't collab'd in a long time. maybe sometimes you just hit walls and that's it?
Well, one thing that I did when I first started making my game was experimenting with making different genres of games, when you don't like many of them, just choose the one you like best.
I remember when my game was nothing but one room with two tiles, but I just kept trying to figure out what works best with the game, and here we go, more than 5 years later, I got shitloads of content.Just find what genre of games you like to work with the most and go from there, I guess. Don't EVER get impatient. When you get bored with your game, just add something new, tweak or polish something, you'd be amazed how different your game will feel.
