Yoyogame's new site...

Looks much more respectable:

Looks much more professional. Too bad it's still mostly overrun with horrible games.

Respectable? It looks awful, the font choice is terrible, the overuse of flash embeds is both appalling and ironic given that they're pushing HTML5 support for the software itself, the logos simply look bad, as well as cutting off on the left hand side without actually giving a border to make the cutoff look sensible, and it's clearly going for form over function, as the old site was much more usable.

And as previously stated, it doesn't get form right either.

I hate that company. I can't help it. When I think how not to run a business I think YoyoGames. The only reason they've got away with shoddy business decisions and horrendous programming for so long is firstly because they're mainly targeting nerdy children, who are the dumbest kind of people in the world, and secondly because they never had to actually produce their own product - they simply convinced an already accomplished program to sleep with them, somehow, and then smacked half-assed features someone doing a CompSci degree could implement better on the end.

Some of their more decent contributions to Game Maker, such as the $1000 competitions, while effective took all of about two brain cells to conceptualize as it is literally "throwing money at the problem". So that's one brain cell for "money", one for "problem"; wire em up and there you go.

If I was running YoyoGames, the first thing I would do is change the name. I would then fire whoever made GM7 (a universal error message before the program starts? really? you released that?), whoever is coding the Mac port and all of the web designers. I would then hire a new web designer and somebody who can actually do graphic design (I'm assuming they don't have anyone in this department to fire). I would then make the Game Maker website and the game submission portal completely separate brand identities, the latter aimed at kids, the former at a general audience. I would make Game Maker ~$15-20 and play hard sell. Something like GM is so word-of-mouth it's untrue. You want tons of users buying for small profit, not a few for an overpriced product. I'd fix the bugs and deficiencies free of charge. I'd add the features people actually want and charge less for them, less often. It turns out people don't want to buy another brand new full version of your product with only a couple of changes - who knew.

Finally I'd stop relying on the work of Mark Overmars. Sure I'd port where porting makes sense (not for the bloody PSP) and again these ports would be free to those who already own the program (cheers Valve), no studio version thank you. But I'd start researching what other programs my key audience would be interested in having and make those too. Then the fact that I smack my stupid company name everywhere would be less vain.

This rant will end now

At first I thought the Flash circle menu is steered by mouse movement, but… apparently it just rotates between Studio/Standard/HTML5/Mac?

Apart from that, it feels like the site has very little content to it. Everything feels disconnected.

Oh well, it's not like anyone visits that site anyway, the sandbox is where it's at >_<

Um… not much of an improvement, really.

Even this? I mean, that 'childish' layout was actually pretty decent imo.

yeah i don't like it either. being someone who still visits YYG a lot, i hate this new site. my main concern is that it lacks content. there's almost no information on this site and it's actually difficult to maneuver. it only showcases a few of the shitty games they published too.

the new versions of GM are a wreck as well. the videos don't show any thing about the actual product, nor do the pages give any information on the product. we barely know what these things are going to be. besides, they just released 8.0 not so long ago, and now like 4 new versions are coming about? there's barely any differences between these things anyway. hell i'm still fine using 6.0 i don't give a damn.

YYG also mentioned in a blog update, that they're killing support for older versions of GM and now you can only upload games from version 8.0 or above.
