Minecraft is officially out + something else

Minecraft related:

it's doing pretty well with its reviews, scored a 96/100 on Metacritic so far, eventhough, I don't see how someone can review a game like Minecraft, it's difficult to explain why, but yeah.

cool. congrats notch.

I honestly don't think Minecraft deserves a 96/100 though, that's a bit too high.

also, the ending to Minecraft is weird as hell, I don't really get it either, it's like 10 minutes of some wierd horseshit text.

[SPOILERS AHEAD… kinda]

oh and Minecraft 360 is shaping up pretty well, I know most people here will think it's shit, but I know I'm gonna enjoy it. it's also been said that the 360 version will get something special that the PC version doesn't have and that it will not be inferior to the PC version. I hope that's not a lie.

Game Dev related:

also, random screens, of a mystery game I'm making. More on it soon. I'll let you know that it'll be a story-driven rpg, somewhat inspired by fallout while adding some unique flavors to it.

Game pics:

I will still be working on TWE though, this game is just slight a mental brake from TWE. It'll only be a small project that'll be released soon. I've been coding non-stop for this game and it's shaping up to be the first game I'll complete in over 5 or 6 years, since I started TWE.

well, that's all I wanted to share.

Seriously, the entire notion of an ending, especially the way it has been presented, is preposterous and somehow takes away from the game.
I'm not going to lie, this is probably the worst ending to a game I've played that I've ever seen.

I remember someone one this site saying a while back that Notch is just a guy who just got incredibly lucky with Minecraft, and I agree.

With some of the shit notch has chosen to do, sometimes I wonder if he truly knows what he wants when he makes a game.

Some of the ideas in Minecraft, like the ending for example, was completely pointless and it was a really bad idea to begin with. It just seems like one day, he has a random idea and wants to put it in the game and just quickly implements it without really thinking about why it should be in the game in the first place.

@JID: I thought that was what he always did…

As long as they make it much less buggy, and introduce new stuff to play with every so often ill be happy lol.

Minecraft is a game that'll probably never be completely finished.

yay, we can finally access older worlds now. I forgot how amazing places like founton were. :D

Minecraft definitely isn't an original idea… and it isn't well put together… or well designed. I guess it was just a good idea in the right place at the right time.

It really is a testament to just making a fun game, telling people about it and hoping people have so much fun it goes viral. Don't underestimate the power of viral.

Y'all do realize it's hard to say ANY idea is completely original?

Just because something isn't original doesn't mean it can't be good. And originality can come from combining a number of different older ideas into something such that it's new - so maybe Notch didn't come up with all the ideas in Minecraft, but he did put them into one game and get them to work together fairly well.

Notch deserves at least some credit for making a game that is fun, decently original, and can appeal to a wide audience. He certainly gets more points for originality than a lot of the developers making generic first-person shooters, or any of the other narrow genres that have been hashed out too many times to count.

As for Minecraft's ending, I don't think it was pointless at all. Notch made a game that's fun, sure, but why shouldn't he want to impart some kind of message with it as well? I'm probably interpreting that giant wall of text they put in wrong, but it seems to me he's saying hey - you've played this far in the game, you've explored and created within this virtual universe, now go and live in the real one. Wake up and do something.

But eh, just my opinion. :/

apologies if that little rant came out slightly confused

…my brain is a very confused place

Well, I'm the only one talking about originality, so I guess you're talking to me. And if you read my comment again you'll notice that although I say Minecraft "definitely isn't an original idea", I also say it's a "good idea" and that it's "fun". So I don't know what you're arguing against exactly.

It's like you say. Notch should be credited for bringing the idea to the masses in a product that works well. It's the same sort of thing as the iPod or iPhone, when they first came out. The ideas that inspired those devices were not wholly original (they just had the means to put them in to action) and they had a lot of flaws, compared to their competitors. But it was the overall package that sold them (and the marketing). You don't have to be inventive to be innovative.

I suppose what I was trying to say was that Minecraft is an original idea in the sense that it's a combination of maybe-not-original ideas. While also agreeing with what you were saying after that bit.

I think I was reacting less to your comment and more to JID's comment to be honest

…I'm not actually sure why that first part came out longer than the second part…lol

sorry about that :<
