Well, the fifth and final round of voting just started for the Ludum Dare theme. Here are the choices what made it this far:
AlchemyAlternate RealityArtificial LifeBuild It, Then Use ItCastlesCastles in the SkyDeath is a New BeginningDiscoveryEvolutionExplorationExplore the UniverseGrowthIndirect ControlLimited ResourcesMinimalismOne RoomParallel UniversesRandomly GeneratedSurvivalTiny WorldOne of these will be the theme that defines the weekend for LD Contestants everywhere. I can understand what some of the detractors are moaning about to a degree; some of these really are crappy themes, and some of them are design elements rather than themes. My problem comes when the aforementioned detractors try to claim that their favorites are the best while the ones that they don't like are the crappy themes. My assertion is that this is entirely subjective, and the proof is that a lot of the ones I liked are the ones getting moaned about. Whatever the final result, I'm pretty sure I'll be attempting an RPG with Roguelike elements. Probably based on an idea that I developed initially as a demo world for a MUD codebase I'm planning. Two days isn't much time, so there probably won't be a lot to it. I'm just using it as a springboard to get me going. It's going to be a busy five weeks.:)
I vote for Artificial Life.
Just to give you guys a few days of pure hell.Except then they'll all just be some stupid microscopic creatures or something.lol nice
Already figured that one out; mine will be about robots if that comes up. Unless I can think of something cooler in the meantime.wtf half of the ones I absolutely hated are on the final list
People have no taste.I guess the "popular" ones are obviously going to get the most votes. They're also the most boring and uninspiring, imo.My ideas
AlchemySome kind of art game about burning people's faces off with acidAlternate RealityA disturbing/creepy pokemon rip-off called "Poke Monsters" where you tame lovecraftian old dears with a stickArtificial LifeA very simple action game, except the challenge is that you have to control the character by writing phrases. As the game will be made in 48 hours, no doubt the character will be retarded at understanding you, like a robotBuild It, Then Use ItBoring themeCastlesSome kind of adventure game where you are a king in your castle under siege and try to flee by yourselfCastles in the SkySome kind of sarcastic-joke-strategy-game where it is pointed out how hard it is logistically to manage a keep hundreds of feet in the airDeath is a New BeginningProbably a bit like my evolution idea.DiscoveryProbably like my exploration idea.EvolutionPlatformer where at any time you can mate with an enemy which kills both of you but you now control the offspring of the two of you which shares your characteristics + random mutationsExplorationGame where you have to find your way out in the darkness but shining light on enemies sends them after you.Explore the UniverseBoring themeGrowthPlatformer/puzzle where you can get bigger but you can't get smaller. Fuck this themeIndirect ControlProbably the same as the artificial life ideaLimited ResourcesSomething about mars colonizationMinimalismBoring themeOne Room"Crack House Tycoon"Parallel UniversesSome kind of game where you switch perspectives between an action platformer and a turn-based strategy while in the same relative situationRandomly GeneratedBoring themeSurvivalSomething to do with severing your own limbs in order to surviveTiny WorldA mario clone where the world changes size instead of mario. Boring idea for a boring themeHmm… going back over the votes, it looks like we have a high probability for getting one of the following:
Artificial LifeBuild It, Then Use ItCastlesDiscoveryTiny WorldThat's assuming the end decision is based largely off the votes. This is my first LD, so for all I know that last poll could be a red herring and they might just be picking crap randomly out of a tin can. Anyway, I agree. That's a big meh.Theme-wise, the Molyjam (what would molydeux) seemed much more interesting.
Tiny world.
*Flips table and everything else in the room*I, too, am underwhelmed. Double meh.
I had a contingency plan for this. Lessee… here it is.Tiny World – See Evolution. Ok…Evolution – I hate you for this.Roit. So much for contingency plans. On the bright side I have a tits idea
