Eeeeeyyyyyyy [Update]

whats up 64 midgets, long time no internet-see.

I feel like I haven't done a real progress/life blog in forever, so I might as well do one now I am in the mood.

So over this last year I have begun 3D modelling. This is something that I was never really that into before, but it is part of my HND course, and the lecturer teaching it is just so good at his job, he managed to get me to really enjoy it, makes a nice change after years of being very disinterested in anything that has the label of "work" attached to it.

I haven't been doing it as much as I probably should have done in my free time, but when I do get started on something, I just don't stop for ages.

In my course I created a model of an abandoned, zombie infested house

An unfinished game, designed to be an advert for a soft drink

An animated flythrough of a cyberpunk room

And a gun model and concept designed for a puzzle game with a similar style of play to portal (it links physics objects together so their physics can affect eachother from far away to complete puzzles)

outside of college I have modelled, but not textured a VTOL aircraft with animated wings and landing gear

and most recently, my first exploration into organic modelling with a face, which is far from completed

So back in the real world, I have completed my first year of my HND in Creative Media and Games Design, which is going well so far, out of what has been marked, I have 4 distinctions out of 5 and one merit, which is a massive change from my A-levels, where my grades where DDEE, and no, those D's don't stand for distinction.

I have started to come out of my shell more socially, after realising that I was pushing people away by assuming that they would not like me before I even talked to them. I still spend most of my time indoors, but now when I do go out, I don't spend the time wishing I could go back home.

I broke up with one girlfriend due to differences in what we wanted from the relationship, still (admittedly awkward) friends and we talk every now and then. I have kissed a couple of pretty girls since :3

I still get waves of hyper laziness where I cannot even be bothered to play video games, but they tend to be over sooner.

so yeah, this has been a very good year if I look at the full picture, especially if compared to the 2-5 before it.

I hope you are all having good years too, and if not, well I hope it gets better soon.

I love you all SOOOOO much

I'm looking to start learning some 3d modeling, for a game I've bee wanting to make. What program do you use, and do you know a good place to start? I have some experience with solid edge, but more as a engineering tool..

Those models you made look really cool! Nice job!

@Hel :D I feel so special

@Username I use 3DSMax, I have been taught it over this last semester by one of my lecturers, and I also took an extra 3 hours a week where he taught me and a couple of others some stuff during our first semester to prepare us for the second

I would just say do a shitload of tutorials. oh and be on the lookout for interesting things when you are in the real world, on your way to work or whatever, start to think about how you can model it while waiting for a train, then use that knowledge to add details to a model.

most of these things used reference images/a collection of photos of houses or whatever which I drew inspiration from, or used to get the correct proportions. then once I got going by following them, the ball just started rolling and I started seeing potential details to add to it. for example, while modelling the face, I was in perspective view and noticed that the way my unfinished model lined up with the reference in the distance looked like a cool gas mask.

I am becoming more aware that I don't really write, I just spill my brains onto the comment box, so I hope this made some sense to you.

Hello, Ronnica. How long have you been wearing Moikle as a skin?

Also, I know keep saying this but- Modo|701, ftw.

3DSMax is cool too, and has way more plugins, but Modo's interface is delicious.

silly Juurian, i'm the only one who impersonates people here.

whispers i'm actually colseed

Moikle, join IRC sometime! we spill our brains out regularly in there lmao.

Nice models. I wish I'd had a bit more training in the non-organic disciplines.

so yeah, I updated it and rendered my face model thing with nice lighting, then proceeded to mutilate it for the lulz

this was a reference image I found through google. I want to find out who the person in the photo is and send them that video

That was awesome. I wish I could model, or even make pixel art for that madder. ;-;

That's how a lot of my final face models ended up looking like– earless, because they're a bitch to do.

Anyways, that textured version is pretty awesome, that was usually where I stopped when it came to modeling. I'd try to do hardsurface modeling, which was relatively (very big relative) easy, but when it came to texturing, NOPE.

Did you do a UV unwrap on it before you added the texture? Cause it looks pretty spot on. I'd end up with the mouth being on the forehead and the eyes wrapping on the chin.

Edit: Also that house model is pretty cool. Sexy destruction, almost looks like it's in motion somehow.

that is a test texture, I haven't unwrapped it yet, I just used a plane map with the reference image, I will be doing the unwrapping next.

he now has ears and a neck, and even some detail in the ear (albeit very jagged and low poly). I also added a uvw map to the side of his face as a temporary replacement for an unwrap

and here is a 360 (almost) spin, where he looks into your soul and smiles a little
