My first project

Posted by Picc84 on June 20, 2007, 12:27 a.m.

This is going to be HUGE project, that i'm going to definatly stick with. its so easy, yet so hard. Its easy to add the easy stuff, yet hard to add the hard stuff. Its going to be a OS. For now, a SUB OS, but eventually a fully GM written OS. I'm looking for someone to help me and create me a internet browser for it. Credits would be HUGE for it. but yea. Anyways! I'm learning GML allot quicker than I believed I would. Espically after a couple tutorials and things like that. I've learned about IF statements really well now, and i'd like to move on to arrays and stuff.

Anyways! Please dont flame me, I know i'm a beginner. But Like I said, i can always come back later, and add more to it. Hopefully later on in the years this will include things like fully operational word processor, *FULLY*, Good Paintprogram compparable to paint.NET, and online features such as an IM program, and browserr.

1 main reason why you SHOULDN'T go ahead with this.

1. MAJOR LAG. Game maker is WAY too slow for an OS.

Hahahahhahahahahaha!

This is hilarious :D I'm not going to even say what's wrong with this. Or maybe:

When you get to that part that you are going to extend this project to full OS, how are you going to implement memory management? Or graphics driver? Do you even know that actually your keyboard needs drivers too? How about file systems? How are you going to handle those? Do you know what multitasking is? Do you even know anyway to boot up your code on your computer?

When you are more familiar with Game Maker, you realize that you actually cannot code any kind of Operating System with it. You are not going to think about web browser or about internet itself in years if you're going to make real Operating System.

Thank you.

But hey, don't make any "Sub OS" or things like that. Those are useless. You should design a good, user-friendly application launcher. If it is good and looks good too, someone might use it.

Intresteing things you have going there Stampede, But when I say Full OS, i dont mean stand-alone. I mean the fact that you could boot up windows, click on this, and go through most of normall activitys just through this program. Not including games that are not implemented.

yes, that "Full OS" is then a misleading statement. But really, you should design it so it isn't fullscreen "sub-OS" like I have seen many times. Those just doesn't work. Make system that you can have different "panels" for i.e. applications with it. So it doesn't overlap all the default Windows menus and others.

There is already good programs for internet browsing and painting/image processing and such. You should just make a program that gathers all of them in one handy menu. And make it so users can add own desired programs to the list. Then it could be really useful.

And these are not "Sub-OS"s by the way :D These are called "Shells"

Thanks, i'll work on that, I'll try to talk to a couple people that have made good games or programs to add to my program. and i'll have a look at that artical you sent me. Thanks!

Oh shi-, you need to add that "(computing)" behind that URL manually. 64d doesn't like those kind of URLs…
