Fsgsg, GM 8.1 is buggy

Posted by Pirate-rob on Feb. 12, 2014, 2:49 p.m.

So apparently, if you start GM 8.1, about 30 hours later it'll start corrupting your save. Then about 5-7 saves later it'll tell you that it's out of memory and it freezes. Then you cry over losing your game. Unless you save in dropbox, which keeps copies of every save, in which case you find out the last half hours work has been in vain and you lose motivation.

At least I didn't lose my save ^^'

But my motivation is gone for designing, so I'ma write a blog post instead.

Ok, so since the last blog I've done quite a bit of work.

-Plagues have been implemented but disabled cause it wipes the AI since they lack sufficient commanders. It's also OP as heck.

-Oceans and docks have been added to make the map look better and give the sailor nation a reason to exist.

-Graphical update! All units have become 3d instead of 2d so they fit in with the enviroment. The reason for this change is that I thought the chars looked flat next to 3d objects and another guy suggested the same thing. Also, Panzercretin said the game looked gross without saying what part of it so I assumed he meant the flat characters or temp gui skin (I hope at least). Not all characters have been converted though, so some characters/soldiers look like knights/collages when they shouldn't.

-All characters will now have 3 attacks instead of 2. These will be assigned to the mouse buttons. Naturally most characters still only have 2 attacks.

What I would like to work on next is to make fighting more fun and entertaining. So if you have time, please download the lastest version of my game :x

http://www.64digits.com/games/index.php?cmd=view_game&id=5737 (might not be updated right at the time of this post)

And please give feedback specifically on the fighting and how it could improve if it needs to. Thanks a ton if you do ^^ I've also added a really simple guide in case you get stuck.

Strange, I usually keep my GM files open overnight, and the only time I get crashes is when I do a lot of animating in one go, without closing the image editor window.

Shame they won't support GM8 anymore. They've been focusing all their attention on GMS despite the fact that GM8 hits a very different audience.

Pirate-Rob: Do you mean when you have it running 30 hours straight, or after you work on the project for at least 30 hours?

Kilin: Does your crash screen make your pc screen look like it has several weird vertical lines evenly spaced with the occasional square switched with another portion of the screen? I doubt its the same as mine, but when I run my pc for several days, scratch that, /weeks/ it starts doing that with high-memory tasks. I.E. Paint, saving changes to a gm sprite(I mean the full editor), age of mythology, and I believe that's all that trigger it. (and I can only blame myself for running my 7 year old XP that long)

SpectreNectar: Save the object info code each time by copy/pasting it. It is a bulletproof solution. I copy it every time I save, and I don't have to worry 'bout other stuff. My sprites and sounds are loaded from file, and rooms are 'manually imported' from an excel spreadsheet (its actually much better than gm's room editor{from a visual perspective anyway} ).

EDIT: What does "fsgsg" mean? Is that a game?

I never had gm8.1 crash on me once yet. nor corrupt my saves. not sure what the problem is for you, are you running in windows8? usually gm will crash only if you have a lot of largeeeee images. best to load those externally.

Hmm, that bug is rather worrying. I've never encountered the bug, but then again my copy has always been obtained by some, "Different" methods, so it may affect it. Could you post some screen shots of the 3d characters, it sounds like an interesting idea :D. I'll download the game in the morning and play, it looks pretty good :D. Based on a quick look at the current screen shots it looks like you use some gradients for objects, the walls of the castle are especially noticable. I'm not sure if they've been changed, but(in my opinion at least), I think it doesn't look as nice as it could if you placed each pixel in more blocky formation. Other than that I like the graphics, and already the mix between 2d and 3d looks interesting, can't wait to see whats in store :D

Death: The guy ran his pc for 30 hours straight. It'll naturally reduce the processing power.

It's like staying awake 30 hours straight. You can't think properly, let alone efficiently.

The solution is simple: [important]CLOSE GM AND SHUT DOWN YOUR PC WHEN YOU ARE DONE![/important]

Lol, I haven't restarted my computer in about 3 weeks :D(No hibernate either), every time I do it looses connection to my hard-drive and as all my applications run off it, it ends pretty badly :D(It starts to auto clean shortcuts and remove files for some reason, really need to find the setting, lol, Edit: It also stops all my services from running as well :( ). It really depends on your OS though. I could never imagine doing that on XP(the greatest…..) or vista, but 7 seems to be ok with it :D.

Spike1: How can it remove files, if it can't access the hard drive? If you are putting programs on drives other than C then no wonder you have problems…

spike1 10 years, 9 months ago

Sorry, what I mean is that if I start any of my non portable apps, the majority of the time any files with links to the hard drive either corrupt or delete work. Take blender for instance. If I have a linked file for only part of the scene, then I might not notice it and save making blender turn all objects with linkages to the hard drive into empties, removing animation ddata and lots of work :(. Window also removes any shortcuts on the desktop to things on the hard drive.

I have most of my programs on my external drive so I can reinstall windows easily without having to add all the programs back in :)

Edit: btw the hard drive itself is fine(have tested on other computers)
