Welcome to the 2nd Issue of 64DigitsInformer. This weeks main feature? An interview with develor Obelisk Affected about his project, Teleka.I. DebateII.InterviewIII.ReviewsIV.Game PreviewV.KudosI.DebateGraphics
V.S.
GameplayOkay, this is a longstood debate among gamers, "Which is better…Graphics or Gameplay?"As for me…I definately prefer gameplay. Sure you might have the prettiest game, but how does it play? Sure a game with crappy graphics isn't fun to look at…but it's more fun to play than a perfectly visual masterpiece. But then again, that's just me…let me hear what you think, leave a comment on what's more important for you…graphics, or gameplay?II.InterviewWe got a chance to virtually sit down with Obelisk Affected to find out the latest on his Zelda-Inspired project, "Teleka"64DI: For those new to your project…what is Teleka?OA: Hm, where to start…Teleka is an adventure game that my good friend Asterisk and I have been working on for as long as I can remember. I've had to start over about…*thinks*…Six times. But I'm done with all of that now. We're cooking up the real thing this time. It's arguably the most demanding Game Maker project to have ever existed. I'm aiming towards a full-length adventure with high expectations. With just a team of two high school students, it's no walk in the park.64DI: I see, I'm itching to play already. Can you tell us a little bit about the story?OA: I think I'll start with the first of the three protagonists, BUBZ. He's a member of the Czar, a "cyborg" race. Every Czar is ranked by their destructive potential. Millenia ago, their homeworld was invaded, and as a result they became invaders themselves. In the eyes of the other Czar, BUBZ is useless and is sent on a mission where he will hopefully die. Then there's Obel Zildran, a clumsy gecko with paranoia. He accidentally damages a Czar statue, and as punishment (though he thinks it's a mission) he is sent with BUBZ. Last and definately least is Aster Mira. He is presumed dead, accused of burning down a small village, and his home city is now underwater. He keeps in contact with none except his friend and neighbor, Obel. Aster goes with Obel and BUBZ on their mission in to protect them, but he has another secret motive…There are a few things I want to tell you, but I think I'll save it for later.64DI:Interesting, So how will the game play out? The gameplay I mean?OA:It's fairly similar to most two-dimensional Zelda titles, but with some third-person shooter elements thrown in as well.64DI: Now, Is there any inspiration besides Zelda behind this game?OA: Of course there is. Inspiration is all around us. If you want every single source of Teleka's inspiration, expect a massively long list.64DI: Well, we don't want to double the length of the issue…so we'll move on, Can you give us an expected release date?OA: If I knew, I would tell you.Expect to see more about this game as we find out.III. ReviewsFirst up on our list of reviews…is the latest game from Deadlyguy77, Crash Lander 2Crash Lander 21 Player PuzzleDeadlyGuy77In the sequal to Deadlygus77's Crash Lander, you play a UFO bent on…not invasion…orb-collecting. You have to control the little ufo through 8 levels of mazes. The control scheme seems to work perfectly. When you barely pass through a small passage you feel a rush of relief and satisfaction. The graphics are basicly unchanged, but that's okay because they're not bad. You might find yourself frustrated everynow and then with a spot you can't get thruogh, but you'll make it. I would of loved to see more levels, multiplayer, or a level creator in there, but the game makes do without. All in All…I give it a 8/10 (It works for some fun quick action, but it could definately be more, but it was fun!)Platform Shooter1 Player Shooter ExampleWilllewisIn this nice little example we get a pretty clean platformer shooter engine. The deaths are smooth and fun to look at, and the shooting is simple. Complaints? Well, you can't exactly shoot anywhere except in front of you, and the walking, while smooth…is a little too slow for my taste. Someone could definately use this if they're making a platforming shooter because it's really good. Everything works right, the graphics are smooth, and it's jumping works well too. All in all.I give this one a 8.75/10 (9) (Eveything works right…but it seems a little uncontrollable. If you're making a platform shooter, I advise you to check it out!)IV. GamePreview.I'm going to give you a little preview of my own game this week, but if you'd like your game to be in the spotlight, ask and we can make arrangements!Game? Javelin.Style? Top-Down Adventure.Developer? RobineivetsJavelin is a top-down adventure game due to release sometime in 2008. It is the main project I'm working on and is taking up much of my time. The game is set in a far fantasy world where kindoms battle and villages are raided. Our main character is Zyx, unbeknowest to him, he's a prince. He would of been the ruler of his kindom had it not been for an evil tyrant raiding the kindom and murdering his parents. Now…he must defeat the tyrant, and take back the throne. The gameplay is going to be very interesting. Especially with over 100 weapons. You'll be using everything from Javelins to Swords to staffs to magic. Along with the multitude of weapons, the story will be deep and will have a different style of storytelling. Instead of your usuall cutscenes, I've decided to use a virtual comic book to tell the story of Javelin. Javelin will feature characters you'll learn to care about. Depending on some of the choices you make, they could possibly die and leave you feeling almost guilty. Be on the lookout for more on this game here at 64Digits Informer!V. KudosKudos is the segment of the magazine where we give out "kudos" to a user here on 64Digits who has shown he deserves it…this weeks Kudos go out to…JakeX!JakeX is probally the most famous 64Digits user here. He is a mod who deals with everything just the right way. He's extremely under-appreciated and should get a littl bit more credit. He also is a great game developer. His game, CollumnsX is the 5th most downloaded game on 64Digits and He has 3 WIPs rated 9 or higher. So if you get a chance. Give some kudos out to JakeX
I really like them markup. Problem is that there is none, turning this into a wall of text.
Consider headings. <_<
Not a bad issue this time, let me just comment on the last paragraph concerning JakeX.use and stuff, but cool. :)
Nice issue, but try formatting this a little… prettier. And I vote for Gplay. Want good graphics? Look outside the window.
Interesting content I must say (specially when you throw my game in there) *smiles*
Here's some advice for your next issues:-If you include links to reviews and WIPs, it'll be much better-Use the bbcode, it makes stuff look better-My game's genre clearly states 'Arcade-Ability', read the info on other people's games-My username is DeadlyGuy77, not Deadlygus77's, read usernames if you want to include them here, and the 'y' and the 's' keys on the keyboard are far away from eachother-Probably Obelisk Affected would prefer to be refered as a 'developer', not a 'develor'. Typos = UnprofessionalityOtherwise, nice start :)And I prefer gameplay to graphics, although pretty, neet and flashy stuff on my screen is always welcome.DeadlyGuy77Yeah, I don't like JakeX. If you go back to my old blogs we were insulting each other.
But yeah gameplay kicks graphics out. Why else would people still be playing old Final Fantasy games? There is one thing to GFX though other than making it prettier. Graphics give you more downloads/purchases making them seldom expendable.I'm not in it. Fail.
lol
JakeX is under-appreciated… I don't think so.
Otherwise nice little 64DigitsInformer you got there.
