I decided I did not like were the new map was going, and will scrap it.
I've made some changes warranting that anyway. Like precoded coloring for rocks to match their environment. I may do the same for other such decor. Grass, stalagtites, and other similar stuff.
Also I found out that with the new engine, more is better. In that large polys are bad, and lots of small ones are good. This is because each poly gets a thread for faster rendering, but larger polys can bring down performance. This is all CPU, no video card is touched.
So that means more detail can actually improve performance. And I had some new ideas for how to design levels. I made some good progress in the ruins for the first map, I felt, and will be bringing some of that design to the new one.
This is a good thing to do now, before I got too deep into that last map. Although I may still use it for testing purposes and save the new one for a more advanced build, like when everything is working.
