[SG] C++

Posted by Stained Glass on June 6, 2007, noon

Despite me not blogging in 4 months, I still have been active, so to catch you up a bit.

Well now I am officially on summer break, guess I am glad to be out of school but sometimes I get really bored. I have things I could do but now that it is summer I am just to lazy to do them.

This summer I have to start training for cross country. I guess it wouldn't be that bad if I had someone to run with, but running 4-5 miles on empty country roads gets boring pretty fast. Also on the country roads there is a lot of stray farm dogs that like to follow me. It wouldn't be that bad if they weren't barking like mad trying to attack me.

Another thing that I am doing this summer is learning C++. I don't know if I will ever completely abandone GM but as I got into more advanced programming I started noticing that GM didn't get the speed I was looking for. So I started looking for a faster language and figured C++ would be a good way to go. The internet has been supplying all my needs so far with some nice tutorials, but after the first few I realized C++ isn't going to be an easy language to pick up. After the first day of downloading GM I could put graphics on the screen in a game-ish fashion and even make my character move around, but in C++ after days now I haven't seen the slightest hint of how to actually draw things on the screen.

If anyone would care to tell me how I would eventually draw things on the screen in C++ it would be very helpful. (You don't have to put any functions, I just want to know if it involves a different compiler or editor)

In Gm related news I haven't really been programming must at all with it and currently have no projects at all. It is mostly because I noticed none of my games had good graphics, so I disided to try to learn pixel art. So I have been hanging around a lot at PixelJoint and Pixelation to learn from the masters. I have been learning a lot and have got a lot better, but now I realize how bad I actually am at pixel art. Before I though I was a reazonable pixel artist, but now I realize I can't do much.

And after speeding all that time around the pixel masters I have gathered a rather large collection of pixels to show you guys so I guess I'll just have to make a list.

Hopefully I will blog more often now.

Hey again. =)

I might try to learn C++ this summer too, but just might. For drawing things, you need a library(?) like Allegro or SDL. They should be fine for game development.

You always have such a great collection of superb pixel art in your blogs, keep it up. ^_^
