First blahg post!

Yay! My first ever blog post! Not only on this site, but anywhere at all! This is a big moment for me, so I'd better get off on the right foot. Or the left. Doesn't really matter, seeing as I'm actually sitting at a keyboard typing this. Anyways, I got my Scary4Digits themes and I'm pumped and ready to go! They are Deprived Senses, Forbidden, and Ruthless. I have no idea what I'm going to do with this combo. Let's do some BRAINSTORMING!

Okay, so Deprived senses:

Senses: Sight, touch, taste. feeling, hearing.

Which should we strip away? Ah, so many choices.

Let's go with sight! How would we accomplish that? A game using only sound? I can't voice act, so that's out of the question. How about… text based! That would be cool.

Forbidden: This is going to be hard. Forbidden means "not allowed," aaaannnnd I don't know where to go from there. Maybe the baddie has been trapped somewhere for years, and he has gone insane? That sounds pretty cool.

Ruthless means "cruel and without pity," so that could be the bad guy. Or it could be you… Nah. Probably not. The bad guy IS insane, so maybe a homicidal maniac? That would work quite well.

Then what do we have? A text based game featuring a crazy bad guy who's been trapped somewhere for quite a bit. Sounds good so far! I'll get started on making the game soon, but first I have to decide on a language. I'll probably settle with qbasic. I like it's atmosphere and playing the game on a DOS would seem really cool.

That's it for now. Tune in soon for another exciting episode of: TEH BLAHG!

What if your character is blind and you have to guide them? Or perhaps the game mechanic is disabling senses at different times. Like maybe needing to eat something disgusting, or endure torture, or maybe just avoid eye contact with Medusa. XD

Deprived senses could be used in some interesting ways by playing with limits on game mechanics. A couple games come to mind, A Dark Room and The Blind Swordsman (these are both games you can find online). Dark Room has the player start with a very simple prompt (the text: the room is dark and the button: light the fire) and the introduction of additional mechanics discovered along the way (being able to feed the fire wood, then going out to find wood, running into a person and the game snowballs from there). Blind Swordsman is actually ridiculous, but its great. You have to fight enemies by getting their position in relation to you completely from audio input, there are no visuals at all and the game is in first person. Thats taking it to an extreme but you could integrate some kind of mechanic based on audio positioning. Echolocation maybe? Food for thought :)

Thanks guys. Sounds like you're putting as much effort into my game as you're putting into yours! :)

Just thoughts off the top of the head, the efforts all up to you pal. :P

I just looked up qbasic because I wasn't familiar with it, whats the reason for that one in particular?

Well, I grew up using Petit Computer on my DSi, and qbasic's syntax is very similar to that.

You know, you could do some kind of guiding game. Maybe you are a seeing eye dog and have to help your master? IDK where the horror part would be. Maybe it's just an unlucky day for the owner? I suppose a blind person being guided around dangerous circumstances could get very scary. XD

I suppose I'm just not good at the horror genre, but I suppose you'll figure it out.

Taco I learned to program with QBasic! It's a linear orientation so I expect you'll have a big web of code by the end with all those goto's. I second what Awakezok said, and play A Dark Room if you can to see the modern cutting edge of text games.
