So me and my fits of insomniac boredom decided to come up with a way to quantify how objectively popular a given blog post is.
The formula is as follows:(A + 3B + 30C + D) * log10 ( E )over1 + FA: Number of comments a blog hasB: Number of +1's tagged on the blog postC: Whether or not the blog is pinnedD: The number of +1's on the one comment with the highest amount of themE: The user's total page viewsF: Full 24-hour periods that have elapsed since posting of blogHey, RC posted a blog!At this exact moment it's sitting at 42 Hotness Points. 4 comments, +1, highest rated comment is +2…I went and calculated a few others.Dumb sharing: 286 pointsCreme egg: 153 pointsThank you blog: 172 pointsFinn the baby, 2 days ago: 228 pointsFinn the baby, today: 195 pointsFavorite chords: 40 pointsDay 54: 212 pointsIt doesn't do so well when faced with old blogs though.64jam:Blog Hotness Indices

^I'll post here just to say that might maybe somewhat dunno sounds good
I dunno, wouldn't it impose a strain on the server?
What, a few calculations and then sorting some items from highest to lowest?
Oh yes.
So very much strain. You imply that I know anything about this. I'm guessing.
Before I really look into this, what did you base this of? Your own research?
It's completely arbitrary!
I just figured that blogs could be assigned a rating based on a number of things.Comments and +1's are easy enough to understand, but,If something is pinned, I feel like some mod thought it was worthy of site attention,And the person who posted the blog would have a little influence on it too- hence the logarithm for the person's total blog view count. The highest number of +1's on a single comment I think is indicative of individual viewers who's checking out the blog and their collective opinions on things. And then of course if it's been a long time since the blog has been posted, then it's activity could be said to be slowing down, right? In practice you'd probably be better off doing whatever Reddit do exactly.
I have suggested Redditifying the front page, but actually the site doesn't have enough content coming in every day to warrant something like that. A "what's hot" feature wouldn't be useful unless there was >10 blogs per dayStill. Interesting idea, even if this "popularity points" formula is the magic number to rule all magic numbers. You forgot about the Charlie factor, where you multiply the entire equation to the power of how many names the poster has that start with C…
