Weird GM issues

Like suddenly disappearing backgrounds or video outs or objects working in one run but failing in another, identical run.

I'm having lots of these and it's very discouraging to continue working in GM.

Anyway, that's not the point of this blog, the point of this blog is to ask for help on something that's been bugging me.

Attempting to replicate this sort of transition:

has left me with this decidedly ghetto-ass looking copy:

Is this even possible to do in Game Maker?

Looks like you forgot to reset the blend mode back to normal after the transition ended.

I like the transition you have going there. But it might be bad on the eyes at full resolution.

Oh god, Chie sounds horrible and 10-15 years older in the dubbed version… I've been watching my friend play the undub.

They recast the entire role for the rerelease. It's objectively better, but it feels wrong to me.

Blend modes? No… I reset it at the end of the draw code.

Yes, it certainly is possible.

Output the screen to a surface then draw surfaces-upon-surfaces with non-integer alphas. Modulate as required. If you want to emulate the former effect, including the posterisation effect, use an extended blend mode (or bm_add/bm_max at a push).
