Bluuuh.

Sooooo many things that need to change.

ALL THE THINGS!

This is largely here to be the former half of a before-after setup.

And I can post the 'after…' after the completition.

Regarding the things that don't quite work, I'd say add said things to the list if you haven't already:

The text: "It's a room where you listen to music" blends in with the upper left white circle. Random MS paint sprites (the green and blue shapes) look offputting and don't really look like they belong. The blurred planet -reallly- needs to go. Blurring MS paint blobs never looks good – the same applies for the blurred explosion in the third screenshot.

Also, the space background doesn't look like space. It looks like nighttime snow. The background in screenshots 2 and 3 do not sit very well (at least according to my eyes) with everything else. I think the white shining effect in the lower right corner has a lot to do with it. It attracts my eyes away from the playing area.

Yeah, uh, there's a lot of work that's needed to be done. I don't think I've touched LS since I was fifteen >_>;

Thank you for your comments, even though I'm working at ripping out all of the White Rabbit font usage ("It's a room where you listen to music", among others) and replacing everything with custom fonts.

I'll see if I can get Charlie to produce some okay-looking planet blobs for me.

As for the nighttime snow, that's actually some planet's oceans, a planet whose atmosphere you visibly leave in the first stage. The explosion is actually a background element, it's supposed to look like a star >_>:

well we need to sit down and Skype this

my concepts for this was to be as retro space shooter i can get

design influences : Galaga, the Last Starfighter, any space shooter known to man

the whole idea was to be cheesy and over the top

Uh, no, I was pretty obviously going for Touhou, man :P

Did Lunacy Star ever have any kind of story to it beyond "dodge bullets in space"?

I recall that after Idiot Box and friend was a human-looking character who actually had a name, which maybe suggests to me the existence of a plot.

The stage progression involves leaving a home planet, going into deep uncharted space past a wormhole, and after brushing through the home base of a rogue space military association, hidden under the cover of an ongoing space war between two groups of planets, infiltrating some secret space fortress referred to as the Outer Ring, reaching its inner sanctum and defeating something, locked up by these military jerks for probably evil uses, called the Lunacy Star.

True to Touhou form, the first two stages are more or less wholly arbitrary, while things pick up in relevance starting with the third.

First boss? Wandering square. Second boss? Floating purple head.

And then.

Third? An autonomous defense mechanism for the Hydra Base, whose fleet serves as the fourth boss. The fifth boss is the thing keeping the door to the Lunacy Star's sanctum closed, and then the final is the Star itself.

That being said, there's no set-in-stone interpretation for the games. I've merely established settings and characters, and the rest is more or less up to the player.

I lol'd.

Though, I would encourage you to try a bit of a story in the future. Of course since bullet hell games are all about the gameplay, I wouldn't expect one to have a fully fledged story, but then again, Touhou has pulled off immense popularity because of characters. So it's not so much story, but whatever.

The story only really picks up with the second, but honestly story is lacking a bit in the third due to how the game works.

CIRNO WAS COMPLETELY RELEVANT TO THE LAKE YOU HAVE TO CROSS AND A TOTALLY COOL STAGE 2 BOSS TOO WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT

More in-game context would be nice though yeah. Like dialogue with cockpit cam portraits or something, since they're in spaceships.

(also how many of these things do you have planned out i mean i know you're doing things Touhou-style but geez)
