First hour in a DAW

Posted by Toast on Dec. 15, 2013, 6:20 a.m.

I'm using FL studio for the first time so I can make some music for my video game.

So here's what I made in an hour or so figuring out FL studio. It probably sounds awfully generic since it's the basic piano and bass plugins:

I thought some jazz/soul/funk type stuff would be good for the title screen/menus. Plus I just like that kind of music anyway.

I have no idea what I'm doing so feedback is appreciated. I haven't figured out how to add filters and effects and stuff yet. Am I doing it right? Should I stick with FL studio or switch to Ableton or something?

That sounds Brilliant for a first hour! As I've taken some time to use both I can tell you that there isn't very much FLS or Ableton hold over each other so I would take a look at the interfaces and recommend that you use which ever feels best to you.

Sounds groovy, you should swap in a nes soundfont to match your pixelart.

This track sounds like something out of Earthbound.

View > Mixer

Then from there, you select a track, return to the mixer, and right click to "Add selected tracks". And the right panel is used to add effects, which you'll find by clicking the dropdown arrow.

FL Studio is a handy tool and is a good place to start in terms of a DAW. Eventually though, you might find that another DAW is better suited, but for now, FL Studio is a pretty widely known program that should handle your needs pretty well.

Looking forward to hearing what seems to be a semi-Rez style. Good luck.

@Rez The pixel art is becoming more like SNES/GBA/PS1 era (albeit crappy). I'm going to make the drums and synth sound chiptune while keeping the piano and bass real-sounding.

I am intensely jealous. My first couple of days with FL Studio was spent trying to figure out how to make songs that were longer than 6 seconds, because I didn't know what the playlist editor was.

Not bad at all! That being said, you better make more.

At first I was like "is this for if you're DJing and you need to throw down a song playlist?"

I think you should use some better soundfonts/instruments/whatever YOU call it. But besides that, it's approximately 2543 times better than my first hour.

I tried using FL studio once. Long story short, I didn't know wtf I was doing and ended up messing around with the midi piano for a few hours, amusing myself.

So with that being said, with this being your first attempt at the program, I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS.
