I can't think of a better place to ask, so here goes. If anyone out there knows a good answer to either of these, then you get a (pseudo) cookie.
1) How can I trick Windows (XP) into believing that a network drive is actually a local drive? I need this because Photoshop requires scratch disks to be local, and my laptop doesn't have enough room for the scratch space needed to work with a 100000x100000 pixel image.2) Relatedly, does anyone know a way to get photoshop to save an image in sections? ie: Save the 100000x100000 pixel image as a large set of 250x250 images. Unfortunately, not alot of programs can load a 30GB image, so I think it'll have to be done directly in Photoshop (or ImageReady), but the "actions" seem too limited.
install photoshop in the netwrok drive. Go to Program Files and tell the pc to Share the Photoshop folder. Then anyone in the netwrok will be able to execute the files, including the Photoshop exe.
Image in sections…. I don't think Photoshop can do that itself, and that means maybe you'll need to cut it yourself.
I don't mean run Photoshop from the network (though, that trick stopped working as of 7.0 (unless it's started working again?)), I mean in the preferences, by default, it uses the startup drive as a scratch disk to do it's own virtual memory stuff. You can add extra drives it's allowed to use, but only local ones.
Cut it myself… 100000/250=400 and 400^2=160000… 160000 images to cut out by hand… Um… *CRY*^Have fun. =(
why are you making an image that big?
Yeah, seriously? What would you need that for? That would be about 1000 ft by 1000 ft - what the hell would you need a picture that big for? Signaling aliens?
Think "exploration game." ^_^
I think I found a way to do the cutting. I didn't realize it before, but apparently the new versions of Photoshop support actual scripting as opposed to just the stupid "actions." I just need to figure out how to actually USE it.Whoa, that's one huge image. XD
