My YYG winter game

Posted by abacus on Nov. 18, 2007, 4:28 p.m.

That's right, im not dead yet. just been inactive since school started. So i've been working on my YYG game, so far its been going well but i havent done a ton on it yet. Should have a multiplayer demo out soon though. It should feel like a mix of Rainbow Six and Gear of War. The gameplay will be more towards rainbow, but with Gear of War style (third person, cover system) and then a bit of GRAW styled squad tactics, you can order your team to move but then also instruct individuals to do certain things, like if one of your guys go down you can shout 'Medic go get Branson!' and he'll run out, revive Branson, and run back to cover.

The major hitch i've experinced so far is that my major anim8or file, which has tons of things in it, stuff from AotE and crap, it became corrupted yesterday, i do not know how. Luckily i have only had to remake 2 guns from that file, (blaster pistol and sniper rifle) as i had saved the others as .obj to put in the game. So far i have 2 weapons, the A4 SMG (basically an MP5), and the RS0LC4 assault rifle (if you read this backwards in leet it is foreclosure, i dont know how that has any relevance whatsoever but i thought it would be a cool name), this one only fires in up to 3 round bursts, depending on how you shoot it fires in a steady single- shot, but if you wait a bit it'll fire 3 rounds, then wait, 3 rounds, or you can hold down the trigger and it'll shoot 3-1-1-1, i am working on it only shooting 3 round bursts but its harder than it seems. Anyway i have three screens for you showing off the weapons, models and views i have in.

Images removed for stretching the page.

This one shows off the assault rifle's zoom in the over-the-shoulder view. Other weapons have a considerably smaller zoom when in over-the-shoulder mode (as opposed to normal mode, which is zoomed out and allows you to walk faster.)

This one shows the cover mechanism. To cover you walk up to a crate (or other cover, crates are all i have in) and press space. You automatically go into crouch mode, and if you go into zoom mode, you can aim, then press space agian to pop up and shoot.

This one is the same only i have the A4 SMG equipped.

Anyway by the end of the week i should have a demo (possibly multiplayer, i have been programming it in multiplayer since the 3rd day or so.)

Anyway, the Squad consists of five members:

-Medic (a4 SMG or assault rifle)

-Sniper(sniper or assault rifle)

-Support(Machine gun, smg, or ak47+grenade launcher)

-Rifleman/grenadier(assault rifle or AK47+grenade launcher)

-Yourself, squad leader(smg, assault rifle, or ak+grenade launcher.

The storyline is complex, a bit (actually a lot) like Crysis's, though i thought nothing of crysis as i envisioned this story. You start out as a commando/antiterrorist force trying to rescue a group of scientists working in the Arctic, they have lost communications and a russian terrorist cell is suspected. as you rescue the scientis, you find these alien that crashed back in the 16th century, but their ship was frozen in a glacier before they were able to get out. They have been reproducing and living inside this glacier until recent global warming has melted the glacier enough to expose them to the outside world. When they discover humans, they decide to attack us, as they blame us from their imprisonment. you must fight them and eventually your team gets captured and you switch to the role of your teams sniper, who was off sniping when your team is captured, and therefor is still uncaptured. You must break your way into the alien glacier which they have made into a fortress, in this part of the game you must be very sneaky because as a sniper, you cannot take on an entire alien horde and hope to survive. After breaking out the squad you switch back to squad leader and must face the big end boss, which is an old-school style boss that is invulnerable in certain places , so you have to shoot off its arms and stuff.

This game includes quite a few weapons:

_HUMAN_

Pistol

Sniper

MG

SMG

Assault rifle

AK47+GL

_ALIEN_

Pistol

Plasma goo mortar (like a rapid-fire grenade launcher but instead of doing spalsh damage, it just frys anything it touches, and the puddle of goo stays for a few seconds, like the Bio rifle in Unreal Tournament 3)

Assault rifle

Railgun (basically a battle rifle, it only has a small zoom similar to that of the human assault rifle, but nowhere near that of the sniper rifle)

Chaingun

Energy Cannon (similar to the burst rifle in Falcon Squad, this shoots a blast of energy that does tons of damage in a direct hit, and can 'explode' into a bunch of smaller ones once it hits a wall, allowing you to shoot around corners.

In school, my friend started a videogame creation class, but it sucks because he is using Lamebrix, a browser-based flash program with crappy everything, so i just sit in the back of class with my laptop and use GM =) But i hate how he is because i told him about the YYG compo and he's like yeah well the best flash game has a $10,000 prize, but im like you cant you gamebrix to make the best flash game you actually need flash because gamebrix sucks. Flash doesnt, just gamebrix. He has no argument. Gamebrix cant even spell their own products name right, which is why i want to make a browser-based game creator named gamebricks, spelled correctly, that pwnzorrz gamebrix's ass.

Thanks, abacus. I'll be sure to try that when I can.

Thats what i do just to keep out external, editable files. Alternatively you could you persich's script called mozaic lite to load the files, but then you have to include the file and it takes a bit longer to load.

Winter game…you actually believe you'll win $1k?

abacus 17 years, 1 month ago

No, but i might as well give it a shot. I've been meaning to get back into GM, ive been a bit rusty. This gave me a good springboard to work fast and furious.

@abacus: Huh…can't get it to export my model animation. It'll only export an object in the sequence. Got any suggestions?
