It's no secret, I am obsessed with fractals. Why, you ask? Well because they are actually amazing. And damn that word for being trite, but I mean it. I've been fascinated with fractals for years now and I keep finding new reasons to explore them more deeply. Recently they have inspired me to create some generative art. You may have noticed my banner, it's just one of several gifs I've made using Julia sets, which are an example of a fractal.
My first attempt at making a gif... didn't take the time to make it loopFigured out how to loop them perfectlyCurrent bannerI also made some high resolution images to use as wallpapers. The first few are 1600x900, but then I figured out how to make them larger than my resolution so I made a couple more that are bigger. creation of adamdance of the jinnLately I've also been sharing this obsession with my brother and showing him some cool links I've found on the net. This article is extremely interesting if you've ever wondered how the julia/mandelbrot sets work. The interactive parts are incredible and I highly recommend clicking through them. Also this guy has an interesting story. He suffered a head injury while being mugged and his brain was altered, allowing (er, forcing him really) to see fractals everywhere he looked. He drew the stuff he saw and his drawings eventually led him to go back to school and study math. If you read the sidebar on that page it explains some of the mathematical significance of his work. If you feel like going deeper, you can read the description on this piece that explains in detail about the fractal nature of space-time (warning: pretty high level stuff, but cool read). Well, I hope I did a decent job rubbing some of my obsession off on you. Go forth, fractal friends. We are all but tiny fractions of a much larger and more beautiful fractal, something more complex than we will ever be capable of understanding. Kinda puts this strange world into a different perspective.
i like to travel into the Mandelbrot fractal and keep going… and going… and going… but eventually my computer can't take it :( still awesome though.
I love fractals, there's something organic about them that just hits me.
One of my favorite things to do is zoom through the mandelbrot and contemplate things. They usually inspire me to do things, and as such have become a valued source of motivation for me :P
Also chi you nailed it with the organic part. Fractals are a huge part of the reason I am passionate about nature. I have been going camping my whole life and I will never tire of just observing things like plant structures and finding different fractal patterns in everything. I think that is a huge reason why nature is so enchanting compared to our dull man-made environments.I really like fractals as well and have been a fan for a long time. Eventually I want to collab with someone to create some sort of generative fractal animatior that generates animated fractals based on frequency, amplitude, and rhythm (like a visualizer with only fractals) to use as videos for my music.
There's a guy who makes "mechanical" fractals as well as traditional fractals. He makes some of the best fractal art IMO. It is important to make the distinction between a true, algorithmic fractal and fractal art which makes use of fractals as well as other techniques. The fractals usually always play a significant roll in fractal art, but it is still a distinction that should be made. He makes fractal art. I've order a bunch of his mechanical fractals and have them framed and hanging on my wall. I look at his art and it makes me feel like I'm in another dimension, or inside a computer, and it inspires and motivates me to work on my music. Here's his website: http://www.fractal-recursions.com/Check out the later pages (higher numbers, first listed) of the mechanical fractals in particular. (He has super high resolution glossy prints of his works and will put them up online for you to order f you contact him). :)Anyways, keep exploring fractals! Awesome stuff…so pretty :O
i dig this and your bannervery cool art work! I do love fractals myself!
Psst!

Creation of adam is my wallpaper now, really like that one
As a math major and huge Alex Grey fan, I condone your love of fractals. :P
