SUPER DUPER ULTRA MEGA BALL

Okay so I lied in my last blog (like you guys couldn't tell? XD)

NOTE: This release of the game, excluding being posted to YYG website (as a completed game so it's viewable by others), it's almost exclusively released to you guys first. A later version will be posted for further testing but here's the early version! So aside from whoever I decide to link to the game, you guys see it first.

I am working on a breakout clone, known as WinBall.

It's basically a direct inspiration and virtually a clone of another clone known as "MegaBall". It's a game that was released in 1991 (yes, that game is now 20 years old, at least the first version…) for the Commodore 64. Yeah. I may be 19 but the first computer I ever used was an Amiga OS Computer. As somewhat outdated as that OS seems today, it was really advanced IMO for it's time. At least that's the impression I got from it.

The link for this game will be at the bottom of this post. Feel free to ask any questions here as well… but now, a brief history of my background in game design, my reasons for programming, and art as well and WinBall…

So one of the first games I played knowingly - in that I knew damn well what it was and how awesome - or sucky it may have been was MegaBall. Sure, I played the SEGA Genesis but the Amiga was where it was at. I did art with Deluxe Paint (lol, hi res), I typed up stuff on a bitter contrasting screen, I messed with the UI colors to get my mom annoyed and I even made interesting pointers. And the only game we really used… at least I was allowed to play (dunno what other games might have been on there) was this one game where the mouse controlled a paddle, where a ball bounced off of it and hit blocks.

This game was MegaBall. I loved it. I loved the powerups, the fact that hitting a looped sequence with gold bricks would break them (probably a failsafe when the game detects that the ball is stuck in a loop but still awesome), and even the music and graphics.

This game, in addition form music from other games and bands, art from games and other places, and bob ross… THIS got me into the three main hobbys of mine now - music creation, art and programming.

The credits for the game belonged to Ed Mackey and Al Mackey - Al was the artist and composer and Ed composed. I recently got in touch with Al, and after talking about the game, which I won't get into, I got permission to do a game more or less inspired by it… So for now I'm attempting to directly imitate MegaBall and from there I'll revamp things, add different skins, unlockables, stages, etc.

The tricks that were used in making the game were awesome.

SCREENSHOTS:

Anyways that's about it. As for the download link…

Cyrus, I actually got in touch with the creator behind DX Ball. They both seem at LEAST mildly interested, and have been giving me tips for coding the game here and there.

Personally I like MegaBall 'cause of the graphics and if only because of the retro feel. However I love DXBall 2 since it has the odd shaped bricks, adding some more variety to the gameplay. I also enjoyed some of the music in the game and the way the powerups were let out of the bricks was quite awesome as well.

But ultimately, the task of re-working the graphics are far from done… I added some shine animation to the gold bricks (and the ones you can hit once) but they're still pixelated as the sprites are all 2x the original size… I redid the ball, and the paddle but I only just started to rework the bricks… and don't get my started on the powerups… >.<

How about a Hybrid Brakeout-Rpg game?

@JuurianChi Not quite sure how that might work out. If it were a "themed" breakout game (as Kirby's Pinball Land, or Sonic Spinball were some themed and slightly different pinball games) it might be easier… Maybe even something like a Pokemon Themed breakout game? Haha… I'll think about it.
