In recent days I have noticed a growing divide between the members of the "Old World" sites such as the GMC and 64Digits, and the members of the "New World" of Yoyo Games. I experience an almost "lost" feeling when visiting YYG, because I don't recognize anyone.
It seems obvious that the difference is because of the influx of members at Yoyo, most of whom are consumers, not producers. I believe this is because YYG requires users to sign up in order to rate, review or comment on games. There are too many member floating around, most of whom are not consistently active or who do not have an avatar to remember them by. The many faceless entities significantly subtract from the appealing lustre of Yoyogames.com.(On a different note, I am very annoyed that all I have to write with at the moment is this 0.7mm pencil, when I prefer 0.5mm lead. I also miss my Pilot V5 0.1mm gel pen very badly. It was the cartridge-less type, where the whole pen is a sealed reservoir. Unfortunately, it kind of exploded when I took it to a high altitude on our vacation last summer. Also, I am listening to the Broadway recording of Beauty and the Beast, which is about 5x better than the movie soundtrack, as I lay in bad writing this. I highly recommend it. But I digress.)So what is the solution? I will propose two. One is that members using the stock avatar be reminded, perhaps once a day in the green info bar, of the importance of using a well-crafted avatar. Second, I think users should have a small icon or some other sort of indicator by their name to tell others if they have contributed any games or not. Some sort of algorithm might also be used with this to require a user to have a game with a rating of over 3 or so before he is considered a contributor. What do you think? Is the there even a problem? Is one solution best, or maybe both? Do you have a totally different idea? A cookie for your thoughts.Next up is The Games Landfill - Is Yoyo Games Bloated with Junk?
Hmm… Avatar Creator in creation of profile. Stock Avatars, but a few extra options to make it more individual.
=SOther then that, only idea I came up with, is spam themwell I use always my bananaman as avatar, but the yoyogames site doesn't support gifs so most avatars won't work (+you can use only very small avatars).
about rating as contibutor: well I'm not that fond of such a system, I barely ever bring out anything, so people might think that I'm "just" a consumer. Well I NEVER played any game, I'm just here because I like to program soemtimes..I'm not so much wanting to rate contributors as just wanting to see who are contributor.
YoYogames is 99,8 percent bloated with crap. It pretty much is crap. It fails for anyone above the age of 12.
That's my next essay; you're not supposed to comment on it yet!
yes. It is loaded with junk. Not that there isn't junk on other sites (The junk is usually over 50% of the content of most sites excluding 64digits which has only about 30% junk(mainly blogs)) but over 85% of the games on yoyo are made by the worst noobs, toddlers, and non-game makers out there. They are either edited examples or very bad examples with baddly animated riped sprites and the like. It makes me sad to have my game reviewed by a joker.
There is a lot of junk at yoyogames, but that doesn't mean there aren't any good games. Take that rollercoaster game for example. I think it was made by some dude on a gmc that uses a different language - without yoyogames I would never have played it because I only visit the english one =]
I agree with you about the YYG situation.
The solution?Ignore YYG
