|bd| My Organized Desk

I heard a rumor that 64Digits went to college. I have followed suit. I have done a number of interesting activities here, ranging from learning Texas Hold 'Em to being piled on by large people covered in chocolate syrup.

I have chosen a Christian university (no shock, I know), and I have been pleasantly surprised at how nice the upperclassmen are to freshmen. (The chocolate syrup incident and a resulting black eye aren't much by initiation standards.) My first hour on campus my new sophomore roommate took me to the coffee shop and on a guided tour of the campus.

My room is a typical dorm room. Cement floor, walls, ceiling, etc, with a little carpet on the floor and paint on the walls to dress it up. My roommates and I have a pretty nice setup, including a couch made from extra mattresses and 5 coffee makers (including 3 French presses)! The bathroom is newly remodeled, which is comforting to clean freaks like me.

College, I have decided, is one of the best opportunities in life to get organized. I have taken that to heart and made a Google Calendar with all of my classes, appointments, activities, and homework assignments. I hardly have to think about daily life anymore - My HTC Magic just dings me whenever I need to go somewhere or do something.

Here is my lovely desk, complete with AKG headphones (which I might return), and those cool 3M Command hooks to hold stuff up.

You may note on my shelf some theology books. I submitted a 1,000-word outline on the Doctrine of Man (Anthropology) yesterday, which also required some heavy reading. It was a bit grueling at first, as my reading speed is abysmal, but I'm starting to enjoy knowing more about a subject than I ever thought existed. My theology professor is an awesome lecturer. I actually look forward to most of my classes!

I'll publish more irrelevant minutia later. At the moment, I need to study my Hamlet script and then go to brunch.

I'm barely into my Pentateuch studies. Did you have any particular recommended books?
highly recommend Friedman's "Who Wrote the Bible".

Its not hard-core scholarly book, but its well written and researched. Friedman is a very religious Jew (from his interview on Larry King), but also a very objective scholar.

Judging from the reviews, Friedman appears to be a proponent of the Wellhausen Hypothesis (or one of it's descendants). I have a number of objections to that, primarily a theological one. Jesus (and the apostles) stated numerous times that Moses wrote the Pentateuch, referring to it as a the Law of Moses or even just Moses.

Also, the documentary hypothesis is a solution looking for a problem. If the evidence was reliable, why did other higher critics promptly reject Willhausen and come up with other methods to deny Mosaic authorship?

That said, I've put the book on my Wish List.

Moses probably did write the Pentateuch – or at least the major parts of it. But you shouldn't use the Bible itself, as your sole source for understanding other parts of the Bible. It's like circular reasoning. Scholastic laziness.

This is what disappoints me about most theological studies of Bible. This is why I recommend you study Pentateuch from a secular viewpoint too. It will make you a better scholar.
