Building new computer.

Posted by blue213 on July 18, 2007, 7:53 p.m.

You thar. My 6 year old vaio is getting, errrrr, slightly old now, so I've been told by my parents to come up with a new system which we can then build. So far I've decided on:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 (£120)

Motherboard: MSI P6N SLI Platinum (£91)

Memory: Crucial Ballistix DDR2 PC8000 1GB x 3 (£106*3)

Storage: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 750 GB (£153)

Graphics: PNY GeForce 8800GTS 640MB (£275)

Power: Antec Neo He 500 (500W, £63)

Case: Gigabyte 3D Aurora 570 (£98)

OS: Windows Vista Ultimate (???)

TOTAL COST: £1118

However, I'm also thinking of using these instead:

Power: FSP Epsilon 700 (700W, £101)

Storage: Hitachit CinemaStar 7K500 250GB x 2 (£46*2)

So, anything else I need?

Thanks,

blue

If you buy from novatech your buying from a well established company, they are the leading creator of most Digital TV cards for computers and well over power ebuyer.

However saying that ebuyer is a good sized company with good products at great prices, just don't offer such things as bundles when i last checked.

I've been looking at that bundle that you sent me Ashley, and I have to say, it looks quite good for a good sum of money. However, I'd really like my memory to be at least 800MHz, and for there to be 3GB of it. Do you know if there's any bundles like that?

Again, 3GB is a little unnecessary. Instead of spending so much money on large quantities of ram, get a better processor or graphics card instead.

DON'T GET VISTA!!!!!

You need a mouse.

Sadly i have not seen one with 800mhz and you could also order a extra 1 GB of ram along with the setup if you don't mind the 677mhz. However as already stated 3GB is unnecessary, i doubt you would ever see your computer going over 2GB except if your gonna run 3DMax rendering some massive 3d model (costs alot of money).

Stick with 2 GB and go for a better graphics card or even get two and SLI them. However the bundle looks good except for the memory however 677mhz is still very fast for memory.

Looks good to me. You may need two or three fans though. And yeah, not cheap ones.

Do you have a monitor? I know its not with the computer itself, but if you dont have one, one would be handy :)

looking good, but dont get vista. that only good thing about vista is the speical effects and it downgrades everything and the incompability (u cant use stuff from vista on a xp pc)

OL's advice about the hard drives is very good.

Also, if you plan on working your hard drives a lot, buy cooling for them. You can get really cheap, but effective hard drive cooling for around $15 Canadian. I did this to my music hard drive, and if I touch it while it has been on for a long time, it isn't even near hot, like a normal drive would be. The cooling I use is a fan and heat sink in one little thing that you screw onto the drive.
