Howto: We will rock you

Instrumental Cover

I realize you guys have never really heard me solo so hear's a little bit of what i can do. I might do a full cover with singing when i'm not sick, but we'll see.

I also decided to turn this into a little "how to play" thing. I learned this in 30 minutes. If you can do power chords, barre chords, hammer ons, whole-step bends and are comfortable with your pinky and alternate picking it'll be a breeze to learn. Hardest part is learning how the actual part goes as opposed to the the tab.

Some tips when learning this:

1)Listen to the song. Either the real or my version. Tabs don't show timing so ya have to listen really carefully while watching the tab to know where each note goes.

2)When you reach the xx220x, play it with your index and middle finger. The xxxxx3 should be played with your ring finger.

3) The –xxxx chords are basically played as xx220x only your finger are slightly touching the strings. This gives a more grungy, percussive feel.

4) From the beginning of section 1, barre x141414xx with your index finger (only those three strings, you can barre the top e string if you can't otherwise, but watch your picking) and don't move it for sections 1, 2, and 4. I personally still barre at section 3, but that may be tough to bend with for some people. When learning a song, it's best to find the fingerings that require the least movement or familiar fingerings because it'll be easier over time.

5) fingering wise, x151416xx should be fingered like a Bmin7 chord. I put fingerings for the single notes as well. (pmi) and (ir) mean that you should bend the string with these fingers. The more fingers you use to bend, the easier it is to bend the string.

6)Pretty much down pick for everything except for sections 2 and 3. Those you'll have to alternate.

7) 18r16 means that you finger the 16 fret, but prebend it so it sounds like 18, then you play the string and release the bend. It sounds perfectly fine, however if you do 16b18r16.

8) Use that whammy bar on the long notes. You don't have to, but it gives a nice tremolo affect.

9) In section four, lift your finger before and after the last x151416xx in the phrase to accent the change.

10) You do not need to be exact! It adds style if you add a string or forget one, albeit it has to be part of the chord or nonessential, but i think you get my drift. For example, in the single note solo, it actually adds more of a fill to the sound if you accidentally play a 14 here or there (assuming that you're barre-ing like i told you to =P).

Good luck to the aspiring guitar players in 64d. If you want you can put up some of your own recordings in here of any of your solos or work.

Wow, very nice!

Might have to have a little practice at this solo too!

Aeron: Indeed. Why do i get the feeling that people think i came back from the grave?

there's one problem with this, you didn't put a proper star power path…

chiggerfruit 16 years, 10 months ago

Well if you're good enough, you wouldn't need star power, but i would suggest in section 2 and 3.

Try doing that.

And this one is actually Yes, but it's also a good one to try: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiA1XBXAE6U

Both are for classical guitar, though.

They actually don't look that bad. The only thing is it would take a bit of time to get it up to full speed, but if you can play stairway to heaven with ease or something like "the first noel" by trans-siberian orchestra it's entirely possible.

Is the tab for the bohemian one. Haven't looked for the other one yet, but i really like the song. The guy looks like he's in pain when he plays haha.

Yeah, I've been trying my hand at Mood for a Day (the second link) and it isn't as technically complicated as I thought. You just need good coordination (here is a wicked good tab for that song, by the way). And the guitarist is Steve Howe of Yes, voted best guitarist five years in a row (beginning in '71, I believe). Might be my favorite guitarist, actually.

I don't know if I'll devote time to BR yet… Mood for a Day is too fun :)
