i decided to review everyones game in a blog. mostly so that every game can get some additional feedback (which i know can be very helpful)
i don't rate games though. so all you'll see is things i thought about the game and than in brackets you'll see my final thought about the game.
Arena of Horrors: [disliked]being a shooter, it was far too slow, which made it boring. with only one weapon and 3 enemies that i encountered this game didn't please me much. i got stuck as the red ghosts kept spawning and i couldn't kill one of them because they kept sticking together as i dodged them. eventually i just quit as i walked in circles shooting them forever. there were so many ghosts it began to lag terribly. graphics were a bit weak.
Candy Rush: [???]Installation failed saying "cannot install on systems with NET 4.0 or lower" on my 6 month old Win7 =\
Darling Springs: The animation distracted me the whole time. the stiffness of the character. the lack of an intro also made me feel lost. graphical style was very nice and detail was good. mechanics were troublesome. very hard to survive against a single enemy, reloading is far too slow, along with movement means certain death. no way to defend yourself. the atmosphere is heavy and interesting, i really want to play further into this but the difficulty is irritating at times. i could only make it as far as the guys who throw their heads. i die incredibly fast before i can get enough shots on it.
The Feild and The Tower: [it was decent]very short chase game. the changing camera is the only thing that made it slightly difficult. i liked the graphics and the style but seems like more could have been done with this. the axe served no purpose and the tower scene was very easy. i would like to see more done with these resources though please.
Harrowing Lair: [annoyed me]i don't have python and didn't want to download it just to play this game. sorry.updated: it took me 22 mins to download and install all 3 components to get this game running. the first time i run the game it freezes than crashes. the 2nd time i run the game it works. however the resolution of the game is much larger than the resolution of my monitor so i could not see the entire window. i couldn't read all of the instructions and could barely back out of the instructions.
when i got into the game, i instantly disliked the graphics. a HUGE window with the majority of it being pitch black? why waste so much space for that? next i attempted to walk into a hallway and got stuck on the corners. the collision here is really bad. i couldn't see the bar that was supposed to show how much oil i had left so after wandering around aimlessly for a while it went completely black. i saw a few items along the way, looked like needles or something, i couldn't interact with them at all though. after about 10 mins of this i got annoyed and closed the game.
Hell Awaits: [disliked]no music, minimal graphics. weak expression. the few sounds were mostly annoying. walked slowly and was hard to dodge enemies. didn't make it very far after recieving the gun due to lack of interest on my part.
Jared the Friendly Pumpkin 2: [confused]this is a game? just float around for a while. go anywhere and the game closes. the end.
Lightbound: [somewhat boring]exploration can be fun, if made to be fun. this was kinda boring. finding treasure that had no significance is not fun. it was so dark that i could hardly see anything, including the bat things that fly out at every corner. i just heard the sound most the time. the music was neat and the textures were decent but the gameplay was disapointing. i hope since this appears to be a demo, that this game can go somewhere more exciting.
Little Witch Sayuri-chan: [ it's OK ]i dislike the space shooter genre as a whole, that goes along with most 2d flight shooters. however bullet hell genre is something i greatly dislike. they've always confused me. for one thing, there are millions of bullets (with lag) and only 1 of you with 1 point as a life bar. die if you touch anything yet it takes thousands of bullets to kill anything. the majority of these games i've played (along with this one) give you a character that's as slow as a snail. it's difficult to dodge the bullets as they always move faster and come in random patterns were often you have no choice but to get hit. this game seems as typical as any other bullet hell. only difference is the music is nice, the graphics were decent and had a surprising 2.5D style. if the gameplay was more enjoyable this could be a great game. my only advice would be to try and make the game more playable to people outside the bullet hell fanbase.
Monster: [interesting]this was defiantly entertaining. i only wish it was longer. i really want to see where this goes. seems like a strange thing to turn into a comp entry since it seems like nothing more than a teaser to a much bigger project. still, i'm looking forward to this. animation was pretty damn good for such detailed sprites.
Operator: [interesting]a strange horror game. i enjoyed walking around the house and finding clues to my next step. it was a little confusing but not too much. the ending made me unsure, i wondered if there was multiple endings but i can't see any other choice to make at the end. the graphics weren't that good but the detail in the environment was decent. i would like to see this project continue.
The Real Ninja: [LOL]this game is just weird. the graphics are horrible, the voice acting is funny. the logic is gone and the gameplay is empty. it seems like it should be a score based game but it's not. with unlimited lives i wasn't sure if there was progressing at all. occasionally a new enemy would appear and more annoying to kill than the last. how is there fancy light hardware flying in the sky above houses? how do you slash at people when your 100 feet away from them? this game certainly fits the flash genre.
Rooms: [confused]the graphics were very weak. boats on lava? anyway i got to the 2nd area and just couldn't figure out what to do. i walked around for about 10 mins, in circles. there is no collision detection so that just confused me. wasn't sure if it was on purpose or out of laziness. i heard a few voice clips here and there but they didn't seem activated for any particular reason. i memorized the whole outline and found nothing as i walked through them numerous times. than a little thing flew at me and the screen went black. than lit up again and i was in the same spot. i just didn't know what to do with this so i closed the game.
saga of the ugly 2: [entertaining]i like this much more than the first one. graphics are a little more pleasing. however i dislike the lack of music. this game is a bit more casual though from the original which is good in some ways, makes it more playable but also makes it more predictable. i haven't finished it yet but i'm having a fun time with it.
scary game: [boring]this idea has been done before and it's obvious that it's not a threat. perhaps it's because i've seen things like it before but this thing was not entertaining at all.
Transmission: [stuck]intro was strange. seems weird to include a video when it was mostly just audio. would have saved space to just make it an audio clip. anyway couldn't get anywhere. no explanation of controls and as soon as i get near the piano there is no way to get back out of that window. i assumed you had to play the notes to the song that's looping endlessly but no matter what combination i tried i couldn't get it to go. even though it was only 3 notes being played.
Final Words: well the comp entries were mostly how i expected them to be. there were some neat ones and some weak ones but it was fun going through them all anyways. My favorite entry was "Darling Springs" followed by "Operator" and "Monster". these nailed the theme the best in my opinion. most of the others had did a decent job with the theme but didn't create a very functional experience.
it was very fun competing in this competition, i will defiantly be taking part in 64D's next comp. i can't wait to see the winners of this one!
I think Cyrus is a pretty good choice for host of the next one, imo.
Yeah, Cyrus would be a good choice.
In that case, I vote for Cyrus, too.
I'll donate if my paycheck is decent.
lol i rushed my ass off and didn't care about the dialogue at all. oddly enough when i write for my English composition class i get perfect scores. also i'm a high school drop out who scored high enough to get directly into college level classes. the majority of college students are far worse than i am when it comes to English. (thus the classes were made so easy!)
EDIT: updated the blog. i reviewed the Harrowing Lair…
