Half-Life (half-bad)

Posted by death on July 20, 2012, 9:25 p.m.

Am i seriously the only one who thinks Half-Life is an extremely over-rated game? I bought the game, thinking "gamers can't be this wrong, it's almost got perfect scores all around, it's the 2nd highest rated game on Steam!" and after playing through almost all of it in a short amount of time, i am incredibly disappointed by this Quake rip-off.

this game has no quality what so ever. it is incredibly buggy. I've had to restart whole levels due to glitches with doors and dialogue, I wasn't able to continue during some of these glitches. no choice but to restart a level? how does this shit get over looked?

The movement just isn't right here either. If it's anything i hate, it's First Person Platforming. You walk too fast to be jumping off of narrow/thin platforms and it always feels like your slipping on ice when you land. Timing and landing a jump is difficult as well. These sections feel so random, as if they've been thrown together for no real reason at all. It's a ton of shooting, than outta nowhere, it's jumping on pipes and ducking under electrical wires.

The combat is flawed as well. There isn't a lot of ammo but there are a ton of soldiers. Man that was random. at first it was a scary horror themed game where you're killing monster/aliens and than it's a shootemup with Tanks and shit.

I'm gonna pin this up as being outdated. Standards have changed. Half Life came out in 1998 and was made on the Quake engine. Valve was still young and they have defiantly improved over the years. Maybe people back in 1998 thought this game had great graphics or presentation, it was also back when FPS games were still blooming. Nowadays we've got way too many of them and so people get a little picky about their shooters.

Do keep in mind, i'm talking about Half Life only, not Half Life 2, or any of the episodic games or spin offs. Since i bought the whole collection (it was on sale so no big loss) I still have to play the other HL games. HOPEFULLY Half Life 2 is better... but i have been fooled before…

p.s. Bioshock sucks too. [/ranting]

Holy shit 10 days left! I'm ……………………… not sure if i can finish in time [-_-]

EDIT: also i feel i should say, i'm not completely bashing the game, i'm just stating that it's not a masterpiece at all. it's not even what i would consider great (imo) but it's also not the worst game ever. I can play it but i'm not enjoying it much.

I just played Half-Life a few days ago.

Not as bad as you say, but not as worth the high praise it gets from the gaming masses.

Well I REALLY enjoyed it when I first played it as a kid.
I think this is why it's rated so highly.

The way we experience games as kids is way different from how we do as …young ad…err….teen…

fuck it.

Adults.

Although this blog does read out as if it's Death's first time playing a FPS that wasn't made after the release if the first Halo.

I like Half Life more than a lot of FPSs out there. The level design is brilliant. It has that weird kind of dead-empty feeling older games tend to have now though, but I kind of love that about it.

Pfft.

I guess I'm going to have to play this game before I comment on that.

Those reactions just scream at me in the worst possible way.

I've never played half life 1, i've played the 2nd one though and all of the episodes and loved it. I do think they are slightly overrated though, but only by a little.

I never played the original Half-Life, to be honest. I never actually got around to playing it.

All I can comment on is the second one (and episodes); I think it's one of the best games ever made, Bioshock as well. Mainly I was blown away by the story/atmosphere.

That being said, there's no way to say, objectively, that a game is good or bad. It's all subject to differing opinions and tastes. I know that's something that should, logically, be common sense, but it doesn't hurt to bring it up since sometimes people forget. I really didn't enjoy the driving segments of HL2, but I'm sure there's a lot of people that really dig that shit.

Basically what this rambling comment is supposed to mean, is I respect your opinion even though I disagree. It's neat to hear someone's opinion differ from the usual. You should play Half-Life 2 and let us know if it redeems the series for you or not.

You mean you don't know i'm a huge DOOM, HeXen, Duke3D and even GoldenEye fan?

Also i'm not a modern gamer. Though i agree Halo is a decent game, i haven't played a Halo game since Halo 2 on the original Xbox. The only newer FPS i've played is Serious Sam and that game is very old school.

how can you disagree on a game you have never played? Remember, my blog was about Half-Life only, not HL2.

lol i threw that in there just to see one of those. Made my day. What i dislike about Bioshock is the GAMEPLAY, a little something gamers have forgotten about lately.

Pop-quiz: What happens in Bioshock when you run out of ammo and money? you die, over and over again.

Heh i was expecting this kinda feedback but hey it's all in good fun. Oddly enough, i'm still going to finish HL just because i bought it.

You know my favorite part of Half Life? shooting a tank with a missile and seeing NO explosion and no damage done to the tank. Ahhh truly was the golden age of gaming.

Half Life 1 is really showing its age these days, its nothing compared to Half Life 2. It was probably amazing when it came out =p But I had a much better time with Half Life 1 than you have had.
