Is video game music good enough to standalone?

Posted by death on Feb. 12, 2013, 2:08 p.m.

The past couple months i have been spending all my music time listening to game soundtracks. Now i'm a member of the Escapist and on the forums a thread was started about how video game music is generic and can't stand on it's own. (the OP went as far as saying that video games would be better with pop music being used instead, like in a lot of shitty teen movies)

Now of course i disagreed with a massive size post but it did make me curious about whether or not VGM OST's could really sell as well as mainstream music.

I listen to a lot of OST's, some of my favorites being from:

-Ys Seven

-Star Ocean: Till The End of Time

-Chrono Cross

-Vomitron (cover band)

and of course tons of chiptunes as well.

So my question is, how often do gamers listen to VGM when not playing games? And would you be willing to pay money for VGM OSTs? Or go to a kickass concert like this?

All of Colseed's Touhou tracks…. I like you.

I have nothing but VG soundtracks because I really don't like most other music. Some games include:

- DKC2

- Touhou (especially Touhou)

- Mother 3

- Rune Factory

- Various remixes of the above

Note that nostalgia most likely is a factor why you like the VGM you listen to. Just saying.
True, but can't the same be said about all music in general?

Further more, many of my recent favorites obviously aren't favorites due to nostalgia seeing as i just got into the games/OST's. (example being the Ys series. They were just released on Steam last year and if it weren't for the great soundtrack I probably wouldn't have liked the game nearly as much.)

Forgot the music in Soul Reaver was pretty badass.

You'd be hard-pressed finding a community willing to listen to 20 hours of music just because someone posted it.

I love VG music, and I believe its fair to say that 50% of my long time interest in the Final Fantasy series has been the music. The other 50%, of course, is the wonderful game-play.

Anyway here are my favorite OSTS:

* Final Fantasy IV OST

* Final Fantasy VI OST

* Final Fantasy VII OST

* Last Blade OST

* Deus Ex OST (The Original)

* Age of Empires OST

* Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings + EXP OST

* Dynasty Warriors 3 OST

* Dynasty Warriors 4 OST

And a whole bunch more I can't rightly recall.

Here, have an eargasm:

Juurian, if I've learned anything from this community, it's that if you post a lot of stuff, nobody is going to bother looking at anything you've posted at all, but if you pick a few out of the many and just post the bare essentials, the chances of it being viewed increases 100%. Just saying ;).

Someday someone will come back to this blog and appriciate the effort I put in.
