Rosetta Stone Alpha

Posted by elmernite on March 12, 2008, 8 a.m.

Here you go, I’ve finally got an alpha release out. All feedback is welcome. Please give me more than just, “That’s niceâ€?. I’m shooting for feedback. A game like this needs a lot of balancing. (Pun intended)

Rosetta Stone Alpha

Small list of credits for the demo. (There isn’t a credits screen in the demo so.)

Jeff Dahl – Egyptian Drawings

EricDB – Word dll

Not much I can think of off the top of my head. I’ve got a few more ideas and balance issues I want to check into and mess around with. But I thought I should get a public alpha out first to get a little more feedback.

Two direct question I will ask are about the online high scores. I plain on having an alltime and a weekly (Kinda like I did for Element Mine). However, do you think a Daily or 48 hourly high score would be desired as well? Or would it merely be a waste of time? I personal am leaning towards having the 48 hours one. What do you think?

Second, Do you think an outside of game high scores list would be wanted? Like I did with Element Mine here. Element Mine Highscores

I can do it again, but I most likely won’t bother wasting my time unless I think enough people really want it.

That’s pretty much it. Just give me feedback on everything if you can. The more the merrier! Oh, And if you haven’t got a clue as to what I’m talking about, Check the blog right before this one.

It's cool, really cool. I enjoyed playing it. You should give a list of all the functions of the different types of blocks because I didn't know what to do with them.

Highscores would make the game more fun because there is a clearer goal. Weekly and all time are enough, I don't think that many people will play it each day.

Edit: Why don't you allow 2 letter words?

And maybe you should increase the change to get a vowel

or not, if you want to make it harder.

Haha. That was a pretty fun little game. I thought it waas going to be more like Boggle, where you could only select letters that touched each other. It looks really nice, too.

Awesome job. Get the menu and online-iness finished.

Great stuff. Although it doesn't consider "meh" a word - surely a bug? ;)

There's some words I don't agree with as well.

Rosetta wasn't accepted. Neither was haxor. xD

Bonusses would be cool though, words that are from one side give more points. Or give more points for shapes.

Ok, lets see if I can get everything:

2 Letter words would be to easy.

What do you mean by there are some words you don't agree with?

Wow! You got the letters to spell Rosetta? The reason it wouldn't take it is becuase it doesn't take proper nouns.

I'm working on bonuses. Still tossing around a few different ideas. Thanks for the great feedback!

Thanks to everyone else as well.

I can't give examples now but I will give them, I encountered

some very weird words in the list. F*ck is excepted as well. xD

BTW my friend like the game as well

Well, I didn't make the word list. It's supposed to be a list of valid words for scrabble. (A pretty updated list too and pretty big)

Thats cool!

But it counts aaargh as a word.

Probably there would be these kinds of lists for all languages. Could you make it so that you can play in other languages. Or select your own language?

Well, I agree, but there really isn't anything I can do. It is consider a valid word and I can't really go through removing everything I disagree with. (Thought if you look at the list it considers (aa) a word. Never heard of it in my life. I looked it up, turns out its some kind of rock.[of course thats two letters so my game won't accept it])

While a great idea. It runs into a number of problems. First, I would have to adjust for some of their letters.

Second, I don't know the letter spread of thier languages. I would have no clue how often to drop ê vs.å

A great idea really! And if the game goes over well enough. Maybe I can get some people together (who can speak other languages) and we can work on a multi-language version.

Don't worry though, I have another idea that will add a totally new gameplay mode to the game. I won't say what just yet. But if all goes well it will be in the next demo.

K, I understand, I didn't really think of other characters. I was just thinking about Dutch, which has basicly the same letters and spread.

Cool, cant wait to see that new idea!
