Motomu Toriyama cries about Final Fantasy 13s low scores

I'm not sure what to think, I've read quite a few different things about it. I'm not sure where I stand, but I probably won't buy it. Just rent it thru GameFly. If the battle system is good, I might buy it.

Japanese game devs sure like making story driven games. Such a pity the stories are so often contrived, cliche, pretentious rubbish.

Seriously, take a look at the screenshots.

"Heroes don't run from fights!"

"Real heroes don't need plans."

"These people need heroes!"

Out of 4 dialogue examples, 3 contain the word "heroes". The fourth is "What happened to banding together and saving the world?"

Western studios make linear games all the time, why don't Japanese ones make more open ended ones?

Well they finally ruined their once epic series in such a way they couldn't get reviewers to gush about it.

the final fantasy series used to be open ended. number 1 and 2 were.
