V3 Dev Questions

Posted by firestormx on Jan. 19, 2011, 3:32 p.m.

I've got some questions I want to ask you guys about v3. If you want to talk about the music project, keep going in my previous blog.

I want to know what I should do regarding the following three items: recent activity, what I should work on next in development, and I want your suggestions for a members points (MP) shop.

———————-

Recent Activity

There's been several people telling me that commenting has gone down since v3 came out, particularly due to the Recent Activity being ugly/in the bottom bar. Mush drove the point home to me in a suggestion today, so I'd like your input on what I should do about this.

There's sort of three ways to go about changing this:

First way:

I could make a preference to move the RA from the bottom bar to somewhere else. Where should I put this?

There's not much space to make a bar in the right side for the RA, because we're cramming so much stuff in the left menu.

I could put the RA into the left menu underneath everything, so at least it's always visible.

Second way:

Rework the way that the RA behaves in the bottom bar. I plan to add in a little pop-up notification in the bottom bar (like an old MSN notification) to show when a user comes online and when there is new activity.

However, that's only a temporary notification that there is new activity (it'll only pop up for a few seconds, then dissapear), so I also plan to change what is displayed in the bottom bar a little bit. Instead of that "(15)" after "Recent Activity", I was thinking of changing that to a simple way to notify that there's something new (like an exclamation mark, or the word "new" in brackets, or something). The problem with this, is that I don't know which point in time to reference for when it would notify there is something new.

When v3 was first released, I used those numbers to show how much new recent activity there had been since the bar was last opened. People seemed to hate that, because every time they opened it, it reset the number. And if they left the RA bar open, the number did not increase when there was new activity.

Third Way:

I could compress the left bar, and put in a right bar, for the RA/users online. The biggest problem with this, is simply that when viewing a game, the information wouldn't fit in the left side, so it would have to be redesigned. Also, the main content area would also get compressed a bit, but that should be okay - with the exception of some peoples' banners.

———————-

Note that regardless of which RA method we go with, I'm not going to be removing the bottom bar, as it will be used for little notifications and chats in the future. It won't be removed, but it might be repurposed.

I'm leaning towards the third way, but that's also the longest thing to program.

What should I work on developing

Aside from the RA, which I'd like to get working on soon, after some feedback, I have a small list of major things I want to hammer out. In no particular order:

a) Build a review system (pushed to the front of my mind by Glen's blog)

b) Game Submission

c) Game filtering (when viewing the list of games)

d) Make comments match the blog fonts/colours

e) Make a "shop" to spend your Member Points on.

———————-

Gimme suggestions on what you want to be able to purchase, as well as ways to collect MP:

I made a push to get the QDB released with v3, in order to introduce the concept of Member Points. At the moment, the only thing you can do with them is ask a question in the QDB, but I'm hoping to build a little economy, to give people incentive to do things (such as answer a question for someone).

I'm going to be building a little "shop" page, that lists all the things you can purchase with your MP.

I would like your suggestions on things you can buy, as well as ways you can make MP.

For example:

To buy:

1) You can change the image beside your name in the Active Users list.

2) You can change the image beside your blog in the Recent Activity list.

3) You can purchase advertising space on 64D for your game, blog, website, etc.

To get points:

1) Answer QDB questions.

2) Every time you login within 24 hours, you get a small number of MP (to keep people coming back).

3) Write reviews on games.

4) Submit a game.

5) Get income for every xth download of your game, multiplied by the rating your game recieved. ie get 10 MP for every 100 downloads, multiplied by the rating. So a 9/10 rating would get you 90 MP.

So suggest away! Think outside the box with things to buy, and ways to get points.

I'd also like to build a members shop as well, where people can submit their sprites and scripts and stuff, for people to purchase. I'll be making classifieds as well, so people can hire others for their services and stuff.

In summary:

What should I do about the RA

What order should I work on stuff for v3?

What do you want to do for/with your MP?

MP idea is brilliant.

Yeah I had the same problems deciding where to put the activity feed when I first made it, which is why I ended up adding the right bar and then adding an option to combine it into the left bar. It seems that theres no right way that everybody prefers.

We could make the order of the left menu customizable so people who like the feed could put it up higher and others could keep it down lower.

I like the MP shop ideas.

About the RA, well, I'd be happy hacing it anywhere else besides that fugly bottom bar.

Even if you just made the bar LOOK nicer, it would make it better.

Where is this ad space going to be?

OR

Perhaps in the main page have the recent activity of everyone on the left under the news and stuff. Cause its empty at the moment.

Then on the member pages, you can show their own activity on the left.

Then in the Recent Activity, change it to only show when stuff that you had commented in or posted so it is much smaller.

A good reason for this is because in the current recent activity, you have to scroll to see all the content, and it doesnt show avatars. My suggestion can solve both of those problems and even add a new features.

ORR

If that seems like too much work, you can seperate the Recent Activity menu, into 2 menus. One for all activity, a second for yyour activity. They would need to be exclusive, but that wouldnt be a problem.

That way you can focus on the stuff you want.

2nd way for RA sounds good, though I don't mind how it currently is.

You've got some solid ideas for MP earning, but it's harder coming up with good ideas on what it can be exchanged for. I think users should be able to transfer their MP to other users, to facilitate the ability to request sprites, code, music, etc. in exchange for MP.

A not-so-useful but possibly fun idea is having novelty badges for sale, or even items entirely separate from badges that are just meant to show off on your profile such as various game consoles, retro gaming items/symbols (e.g Triforce, 1up mushroom, etc.), game characters, and so on. It wouldn't be too useful, but there was a similar feature on a Silent Hill forum I used to visit where users could buy items, characters, and monsters from the Silent Hill games and it was quite popular. Members could submit ideas for items, other members could submit sprites for the item, members would vote for the best sprite and then staff would finalize the item for sale.

Actually, I like this idea presented just above me. Having novelty items (if you're open to suggestion for a few of them) to customize a user's page would be a great idea.

As far as additional suggestions go, I saw "buy" up there, so I assumed you meant people could buy additional points via credit card or similar. This actually could work, because although it doesn't necessarily encourage being a good member, it does still help the site, because we all know how expensive it must be by now. Just an idea.

RA could go on the left bar of the main page, which is pretty empty right now.

And people should get points for posting as well. Not sure about the specifics, but people definitely should get rewarded for posting.

Alright, so the current order I'll be working is:

B

D

C

E

A

Kabob: I could make the side bar customizeable. that's actually what I wanted to do initially, but had no time. Now there's more important things to work on than something as cosmetic as that.

But I'll see about it, and if that's something a lot of people like, I'll work on it.

Acid: The ad will go at the top, where the "non-bug reports will be forgotten", as well as in the left menu.

I'd like to keep them unobtrusive, but somewhere noticable.

The mockup for this design has ads included in it, and it doesn't look too bad.

Alert: I like that idea of putting it on the left menu, beside the blogs, so people can see the recent blogs, AND the recent activity.

…At least temporarily put it there anyway, until a more permanent place for the RA is found.

I have plans to expand a little on your idea of showing the RA of things you've responded to. Rather than showing what you've responded to, I was thinking making a "track this blog" or something, so you get updates whenever there's an update.

However, maybe I'll make something where you can "bookmark" something (a blog/game/etc), and have one feed for that, and then another feed which shows EVERYTHING you've posted on.

I didn't want to start any of that at all, until the Recent Activity was moved or modified, and then I'd make a "personalized activity" or something.

Canadonian also designed a dashboard to keep track of things you're tracking (that feature didn't get completed before v3 was released) so I can build off of them.

But yeah, for the time being, I think I'll just throw together a feed for things you've commented on yourself. It's going to take some programming, rather than just copying the RA feed, but it shouldn't be difficult. Maybe this weekend.

Misconstruct: I like that idea a lot! I've got a lot of ideas already. =D

People love to display what they like, so I could make little icons for different games, bands, movies, consoles, etc, and people will just buy tons of them. XD

Maybe I'll have limited edition ones too (limited edition SNES or something), so people will have to trade them around. ^_^

Kilin: Revenue for 64D will come via Ads and MP, just like you suggested. I want EVERYTHING on 64D to be possible without paying real money, but I do want people who pay to get a little leg up, by way of MP. So yes, you'll be able to buy MP - but buying MP will not get you any extra priviledges (except maybe an "I donated" badge or something)

Melee: I want to wait a little bit and see how the economy plays out a little bit before rewarding posting. I also need a way to come up with a way to judge post quality. With game downloading, for example, the multiplier goes by the game rating.

Comments will have a like/agree/thumbs up/whatever function in the future as well, so maybe you only get points for every 10 "thumbs up" or something. Same idea for blogs?

Acid 13 years, 11 months ago

OMG I'VE WAITED SO LONG FOR YOU THUMBS UP BUTTON. THERE ARE SO MANY COMMENTS THAT HAVE FLOORED ME WITH EITHER AWE OR LAUGHTER, BUT IT WOULD RUIN THE CONVERSATION IF I COMMENTED ON IT BECAUSE WE WERE 30 COMMENTS PAST IT. ALSO, I'M YELLING THIS, SO READ IT IN THAT TONE OF VOICE.
