New Project Started: Touhou SSB

Posted by fromsoysauce on Aug. 11, 2014, 8:56 p.m.

Between the release of Glass Wing on this site and now, I've learned how to use Maya, C# and Unity! And I'm ready to tackle my next project!

Since 2007 I've wanted to make my own Smash Bros game, and I've also always wanted to make my own Touhou fan game. I figured, why not hit 2 birds with 1 stone.

Here I have Sakuya with about 1 3rd of her animations made, I'll keep you guys up to date with this project!

I admit I'm more a fan of Hisoutensoku-style fighter games*, but then I never learned how to play SSB properly, so I'll be interested to see what you come up with regardless.

Also, Unity is cool.

*read: i just really liked hisoutensoku okay

This is really going to mix elements from Hisoutenku with Smash Bros Melee.

You'll be able to do simplified Wave Dashes, Fast Falls, Tilts and Smash Attacks. But you'll also be able to do Hisoutenko style Air Combos, Air Blocking, Barrage Projectiles, Flight and even Spell Cards.

For someone who enjoys Touhou as much as you do (and wants to make a fan game, no less), it's a wonder you haven't attempted a bullet hell shmup yet. Every game designer Touhou fan I'm aware of has created or is in the process of creating a bullet hell game, even if they didn't like such games to begin with. Or, in my case, a swath of bullet hell + X genre hybrids (platformer, RPG, Metroidvania, puzzle, you name it).

I like SSB and I like Touhou, but the SSB brawler is a somewhat difficult genre both in terms of programming (physics plays a big part in gameplay) and in animations. On top of that, it's a niche genre that the original game already fills quite nicely. But regardless of the difficulty, you've shown an ability to work hard and churn out content of decent quality quickly, so I don't think it'll be long before we see something playable, eh?

I think this will be interesting to follow, should it get off the ground. I'm not really a fan (hah) of fangames for various reasons, but Touhou in particular seems to have a lot of very good fangames (Genius of Sappheiros comes to mind), even if most of them are just gimmicky fusions with another genre (hey, this sounds familiar).

Actually, the first game I completed was a Bullet Hell Game, won me a national gold medal in Scholastic Art contest, Tony Hawk said he really liked the game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfYaZYmVh5Q#t=24

Also Smash bros is an easy game to make. Back —when I was a middle school kid— When I was just getting started learning how to use D3D and 3D animation as well as how to use GML and move away from D&D with Game Maker the first thing I made the ORIGINAL "Game Maker Vid"

So this'll be a cake walk, I should be able to have Sakuya being able to do everything a smash Bros Character can do including varius getting damaged animations and a working % ratio by the end of this month.

Olala! I've been thinking about doing an SSB clone to, alongside a metroidvania, an RTS, stealth… I love how jumpy and free the fighting in SSB is compared to other fighters. It's surprising to me that there aren't more free form fighting games like that. The only ones I can think of are in fact indies.

Good Luck!

@ Pirat-rob, yea she's probebly not going to have the blades out during her real idle, Like how when Fox was confirmed for Brawl, in his idle animation he was holding his blaster, but in the game he only holds it to shoot.

@ Nopykon, this is going to allow for everything that you can do in smash but with more. Things like:

Air Blocking

Air Grabbing

Wake up Grabbing

Neutral Smash (taken from the touhou fighting games)

and allowing for combos that involve attacks being canceled with a jump (like fox's reflector).

I had to google Touhou, looks very block-intensive, so I understand what you mean now. I generally like blocking in games. Esp. Ninja Gaiden for Xbox. Good luck with the hard work of animating this!

I got a strong feeling that there is going to be a secret unlockable character in this, and it's mostly cause the character looks like it would fit:

Mayfly?

No, she won't it'd really taint the image of her being bad at fighting.
