I need help making my game online. I can make it work when I open two of it on my computer and play, but not across the internet. What exactly do I need to do? What about forwarding ports???

Game Production Tips

Here goes nothing….

Just about everyone, including myself, has trouble with getting a great idea and then coming up with another before finishing it. Reading this should help you complete your games.

The first thing you should do is jot your ideas down on paper. This is the easiest way to organize your ideas and experiment with others.

Another thing is to be consistent with naming sprites and objects in your game. Don't use 'spr_' for one sprite and 'SPRITE-' for another. You should also use folders for grouping your sprites. If a sprite is in a folder, you should include the folders name in the sprite name. For example, a ball in folder shapes should be called spr_shapes_ball. This makes your games less confusing once you hit 100 objects.

You should also set dates for yourself when to complete a certain part of the game, or completing it. Blog about your idea and get opinions about it. Someone else may have a great idea that you never thought of.

All of these things should help you be a more successful game designer.

I can forward my ports with the exceptions tab of that Windows Firewall thing

As for naming and all, I don't follow any of that. All my objects and sprites are about 3 or 4 letters in name length, and variables have the same pattern. That being said, I don't like making many objects since I use variables to make everything be crammed into a few objects(and I have about…3 sprites?)

Okay, you have two IP addresses to remember. Local, and External. For the external, go to a website like www.ipchicken.com. I think that one works. Now, if somebody uses a different router than you, they'd use your external. Otherwise, they'd use your internal. If you need help getting your internal, it would be easier if I made a video tutorial.

Anyways, to forward your port, enter your default gateway into the address bar of a web browser, login(Password is usually blank, admin, or 1234.), and find port forwarding. Then, forward your port to the port set in the game.

I know this might be really confusing, but PM me if you want me to clarify something.

I know I'm not a pro when it comes to online programming, but I told you what I know. =)
