What makes a good adventure character?

I have been thinking about making an adventure game. In fact, this game was one of the first games I ever thought of, but since I want it to be so awesome I will not release it until I start my career in game design (3 years from now).

I'm having difficulty thinking of the character. I don't want him to be a dark guy but it is very hard to do when his family is separated and there an interplanetary war going on at a global scale.

I want him to be fun and adventure loving, but subtle with the various characters.

I am not an RPG type person but hay… it gets me going sometimes. What makes a good adventure character? Is it the looks or an interesting back story? For me it is the character development which is the most difficult thing.

This will probably take me forever to get right. luckily for me 3 years is plenty of time.
