As many of you know, Yoyogames is making a Port of game maker for Mac. I have found out on Sandy's blog that they would be using the Rapid Application Development program Lazarus. Apperently I was able to pickup the following things along the way (Note: The following are assumptions I am making based on my research):
1. This means that the port will not be just for the mac, but for linux, and maybe Game consoles.2. The delphi code will be ported perfectly, meaning about 90% of the existing code may not need to be rewritten.3. There is a 50-50 chance that games made with the new software may be compiled instead of run, making games harder to decompile(If what I said above is true, then the original runner code may be used, nullifying this statement).4. There are some performance issues with the windows software (especially on vista). How this may affect games made is anyones guess. With that said it makes me wonder how using Lazarus will affect the performance of Game Maker (and the games made with it) on various platforms. Here are some questions I am pondering:1. Will games run faster since the runner is now in C++?2. With the aforementioned Windows performance issues, will games running on various platforms run the same or will Mac versions be slightly faster than windows?3. Will there be different versions of the software for various machines (I'm asking since Lazarus is trying to be like Java. write once, compile anywhere)?4. Do you think there will be a feature in game maker that makes one compile different versions of a game on the same machine; i.e compile Windows, Mac and Linux games and upload them on your site for download?5. How much of will game maker games change with these developments? If they come true, how many doors will be opened? Who benefits? How will this affect you?6. Don't you think the 64digits staff are so hot?
A C++ Game Maker, interesting… Here's hoping it improves security and performance substantially.
I sure hope it improves the graphics speed.
I can't even tell if you realize that just the runner is being rebuilt. This reminds of of the many topics on the GMC, which is the reason I use 64D in the first place.
They are only rebuilding the runner.
Only… the… runner.I assume the UI, too, but…YYG are morons, it really doesn't matter if they beat Josh to OS X, he'll win there anyway.Only because ENIGMA compiles and lets you edit the source after it generates it. Silly people that don't care about that will still use GM.
oh and http://gmc.yoyogames.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=274021&view=findpost&p=2717117
ENIGMA is open source, the games are compiled (and therefore faster, its been proven time and time again), and the engine is fully rewritable to your own personal likings. If GM were ANY of these, there might be some contest. And yet, we're waiting like ducks in a pond for a new GM that might work on mac or linux, yet it will always still contain all the same flaws its always had.
You can rename a windows exe to some other extension and then open in notepad, or even just drag it in. Anyone who might be able to use right click > show contents to their advantage would be just as capable on windows.
