Alright, I am trying to minimize the amount of time I use my laptop so that I can use it for more intellectual pursuits (such as watching old movies, reading public domain books, and of course finishing my game back log). Since I can't leave this blog for the life of me, I am posting this from my phone using the WIFI instead of the phone network(damn you verison with their BS overseas policy!)

So what have I been watching? So far just this gem.

Metropolis (made 1929) is regarded by many as one of the best silent films of its era(and in some circles, one of the best films ever made) and deserves all the accolades it gets. The movie is just beautiful to watch, deep with symbolism and tells a very riveting tale of love, corruption, the human condition and dystopia.

This is a movie that is not for kiddies(meaning that 90% of this community will not get it) since there are tons of allusions to both biblical and historical events (the very first scene screams COMMUNISM IS BAD, DUH). Personally, my favorite example(and down right most blatant) is the one where they literally build a statue for the robot lady to imitate the Whore of Babylon. This is made even more blatant with expositional text reading Revelations 17:5.

As film brain would say, SYMBOLISM!

But I can't talk about this movie without mentioning the Maschinenmensch. No, not C3-P0's mom. The clone of the heroine made from his mom. Brigitte Helm really shines as she plays both the mild mannered Maria and the sinister (albeit sexy in a weird way) Hel. The other actors do a competent job, but some moments feel a bit over acted (its a silent movie, what do you expect?).

I highly recommend this movie to all those looking for something with great art direction and unique story telling. I rate this movie as one of my favorites (along with Interstellar 5555. SERIOUSLY, WATCH IT!!).

Also, I am making the next page of the Square comic right now. Expect it before the end of the week. And if you know where I can find the curvaceous version of the Maschinenmensch, let me know.
