The Squares: This is Halloween Tech Demo

Posted by mazimadu on Oct. 28, 2010, 11:51 p.m.

After several days of fairly frequent usage, I have finally created a small tech demo of my new game by porting over to my dragon engine. The gameplay is the same as before, only this time kyle can now run by holding down the X key. I originally designed this engine for another game where the sprites where smaller so you will notice some oddities with the way things are placed. Also, you cam grapple onto the dragon at the end.

CONTROLS

Arrows = movement

Z = Jump/ double jump

X = attack, grapple, run(hold)

The animations and their transitions are nice. The platform physics work pretty well too. But I think the grappling was poorly executed, and frustrated me to the point of quitting it early, sadly.

I know the grappling hook targets a nearby point, but the distance on that isn't very far, and although the reach on that little thing is a bit short, it feels weird when I'm not holding the up arrow and he throws his yoyo-looking thing upwards at nothing.

That's really the only complaint I had. Even beginning the second room where I started stuck was well handled since you can jump out of it. The gameplay reminds me of Radical Rex for some reason. Might be the swinging, might be the jumping on tiny branches sticking out of the wall.

Overall, good engine. The environment graphics seem a little inconsistent, but other than that, it's pretty cool. Now put more buttons in, because grappling gets old a little fast.

I'm gonna download this and play it, but I have just one thing to say…media fire is the biggest load of crap file service ever. I will never go there again.

Use host-a.net, its free and simple, no e-pollution. I think my computer just went into a state of convulsive shock, its still getting over the pop-under and tab pop double ad page onslaught.

But seriously, I'm gonna play this demo…and post again.
